South Africa v Australia, Third Test Day 1

And that's stumps on day one. It's been an exhausting day for everyone. Michael Clarke will be battered and bruised but goes to bed tonight unbeaten on 92. Steve Smith is on 50. Earlier, David Warner set up the innings with a fine 135.

The big story for South Africa is the hamstring injury to Dale Steyn. Morne Morkel stepped up, but he sorely missed the support of the Proteas spearhead. Steyn, Philander and Duminy took a wicket each on a day that belonged to the tourists.

Thanks for hanging in there with me tonight. It's been Test cricket at its best. This is going to be a great few days.

Check out all the follow up from today's play on smh.com.au soon!

Goodnight!

Philander pitches one up and Clarke square drives for four. He's into the nineties now. But the next ball beats Clarke's outside edge all ends up. Amazing!

And there's a half century for Steve Smith. And it comes in style, with a flick over the slips off Morkel for six.

Five runs for Clarke! He pushes for a single from Morkel's next ball and Amla fires at the stumps, but no one is backing up. That takes Clarke to 88.

A nice quick short ball has crunched into Clarke's thumb. And he has called to the dressing room for assistance straight away. Morkel causes Clarke more pain. We'll have a break in play here while Clarke's thumb is cleaned up. He'll be black and blue tonight, the skipper.

How about this? Afghanistan has beaten Bangladesh at the Asia Cup. That's a huge win for a non-Test playing nation and especially one with the obvious challenges Afghanistan faces.

This new ball thing is not turning out the way Graeme Smith probably anticipated. Clarke is on 83 now and Smith has charged on to 46.

Morkel is around the wicket now - and Clarke mis-times this pull shot, it goes high in the air and the fielder just can't make enough ground to take the catch.

This time it's a short ball outside off stump and Clarke smacks it away behind point for four.

Morkel is bowling now and this time Clarke belts a short one to the mid-wicket boundary. That will feel good for the captain after the barrage he copped earlier!

That's not ugly! Philander gives him one that's too straight and Smith picks it off his legs and goes through mid-wicket for four.

Smith has played some ugly strokes, but he's on 42 not out.

Philander's first ball to Smith has been put away to the boundary behind points. But Smith really chased it wide. A dangerous ploy. Anyway, that's the 300. And the next ball, Smith gets a thick edge and it goes for four.

Clarke pushes down the ground for two from the last ball of Morkel's over. Morkel, remarkably, is still wicketless. It's 3-296.

OK, time for the late afternoon onslaught. Helmets and pads are being brought out to close-in fielders, as Morne Morkel prepares to bowl with the new cherry at his old mate Clarkey. Umpire Dar holds up the shiny ball and throws it to Morkel, who is about to run in.
