Ill put this out for people to agree or disagree with me. On paper SA has the best top 5 in world cricket however Australia's tail is much better than the Saffas
Suddenly cricket has become a spectator sport, Faf is hot. Only Anderson is close on the looks front !
It rather diminishes our achievements with the knowledge that both England and South Africa were not really at 100% this summer, both with retirees and England with sick players too, hopefully Trott comes back, he was always great to watch ! Don't agree with the posts re England's imports , I think this is great for the world game, everyone should be able to choose who they play for , it's a free world !
Must say second Test aside, this team have put together the most comprehensive Australian performance for quite some time. The top 5 bats have put decent scores on the board so we have not had rely on Hads and the tail saving our bacon. As for our bowlers. Well they have made the best batting line up in the world look B grade.
SA are probably the better team as England are but both in transition, all goes around!
I don't think any country ever dominates for a period. Cricket is as much about the off field status of countries as well as results so it depends what you focus on ! India and England are very elitist in that respect and that's probably just as important as I suspect the South Africans also come from good stock, it's just in Australia that it's a game for everyone so get over it wear ......hat
Not really , it's the education of the players that counts and their the social standing is going to be far higher in England, India and SA. It's the posh vs the standard classes mate! And you know it!
A disinterested and demotivated England with personnel issues and a South Africa in transition, Kallis and now Smith retiring. Lucky Australia rather than good and it looks like India may also be struggling to field a full team this year too.
And that, in your own words, makes us the best. Hope that one day they all get interested again or otherwise it looks like there will be another 16 years of Aussie domination.
Bonzo here are the facts. You have made every excuse possible to explain away England's loss in Aus. Most often repeated like a Parrot. teams never win away ark ark, Teams never win away. Now should Australia win this third Test and win the series here is a challenge to you. Man up and write in. Everyone Australia have proven me wrong Teams do win away especially quality teams. I Bonzo also concede SA having until this series lost only 1 series in 7 years also prove teams can and do win away series. Are you man enough to admit your wrong?
So, what's the plan ? David, and Armchair, you're gurus on this blog, how many runs/ overs do you reckon AUS will aspire to before declaring and taking on the final contest? Another 100, 200 runs, thrn declaration? Despite some minor vitriole on this commentary site, it's sort of nice to see a potential light at the end of a tunnel wrt a major victory for AUS!
Jh. Wish I was a guru. Just a true lover of cricket with opinions. Sadly I'm wrong more than in right but hey I love Aussie cricket. Ill say Aussies to plan to be 450 runs up half way through the second session. Leaving the Saffas 4 and a half sessions to get 450. Mind you if Warner can stay in and blast a very fast 100 they may be in a position to Declare sooner. Aussies to go the bash
Bloody beautiful. The fat lady ain't singing yet but a fabulous effort so far, 5 best in the world, give me a break Armchair, and Tragic is essentially right. They are a spineless mob & play most of their cricket at 1 run an over. So maybe a team meeting decided to whack us out of the park was the go this time. Fail!.. 5
I disagree with you however that's the good thing about life in Aus we have the right to differ
Surely Clarke would want to set a lead of 450+ and have at least 4 and a bit sessions to bowl out SA.
Marvellous bowling from Mitch Johnson. Cop that, Steyn. In my mind Mitch has now overtaken D .K. Lillee as the greatest Australian quick of all time. The kiddie is simply unplayable - Im licking my lips when he bangs em in short.
On his current form for sure. In fairness to D.K. lets wait until Mitch retires. If he can maintain this form through to then for sure.
Woohoo! Nine-for! I was just about to complain to Armchair Selector about his comparison of AUS & SAF wrt their respective tails, with the latter wagging nicely, until Mitch bit it off. So AS, what is your predicted scenario from here on in?
Thanks for asking. I was thinking for awhile I had jinxed us. Must say I still rate SA top 5 the best in the world. What it means is our bowlers are working beautifully as a team and on current form are the best bowling unit in the world. Mitch has awhile to go to officially ranked the number 1 bowler in the world however, if you compared all the bowlers efforts this year. Mitch is bowling better than anyone. Aussies to go the bash try to take the lead to 450 or 500 Galway through the second session and Declare. Most likely be 450 lead giving the Saffas 4.5 sessions to win.
James Pattinson - the angry man of the Aussie team, needs to mouth off to take away from his performance. Reminds me of that other dud, what was his name, George Bayley in his first test. Bring in Sid Vicious or the other Mitch - Starc.
Pattinson hasn't done much, I think Siddle would have been more effective with this Day Two swing on the pitch.
I miss Sidds...we need somebody to tie an end down and frustrate the life out of them to force a wicket...young Pattinson is loose enough regularly that they get away with this...Bring Back Sidds!
With all this work and no breakthrough for a while now - these bowlers must be starting to sweat like Gypsies with a mortgage..
Clarkes thumb in the photo is looking a bit 'how's ya father'?!
Who is good with numbers? What are the odds that we have SA all out for 200?
Well at the current score - they would all have to go at an average of just under 3 runs each.....In other words - very long odds
David, this is your capitan from Scotland. Loving the coverage and insiteful comments. Keep up the good work. Go the Aussies!!
Happy to welcome you on the blog, Bobsta. Tek it and mek it, ma boy.
Yes that's the way Pup get Smith bowling more Warne rates him that's good enough for me
Come on boys get Faf out
A no brainier.Austrslia to win.SA out bowled and out batted!
so, a long time until Australia plays a test again.Any doubt they'll enforce the follow on (if available)?

Heavy showers are forecast for the last 2 days. Drawn test, drawn series, SA retain the #1 ranking and series unbeaten record. Mission Accomplished.
No ne takes you seriously any more - you can't even read a weather forcast:CAPE TOWN, SATuesday - Clear27°C Precipitation: 0%Humidity: 64%Wind: 26 km/hWednesday - Clear29°C Precipitation: 0%Humidity: 64%Wind: 21 km/h
Ray SA retain the ranking of 1 even if we win the series. Thought you with all your anti Aus hate would be up on that. I have no issues with that. Number 1 rank comes with sustained success Aus are not there yet.
Ease up on Ray of NZ, people! Otherwise he might lose count of those sheep pellets he's currently preparing for export. Socks off yet Ray?
You should be more concerned about your team scraping along near the bottom at number 7 on the test cricket ratings. Understandable for a one man team though I guess.
As much as I love seeing Mitch take 5 ford, today proves Aus are not a one trick pony
Where's Bonzo? Looks like the Aussies are going to do what no teams can. (Win an away series). Well that's all he has said all Summer like a parrot
Not to worry, his brother Ray of Auckland is taking up the challenge of keeping everyone entertained ;)
Ball is reversing at right angles...something amiss here. ICC please take note. Mitch gave Alviro the send off. Please take note of that as well ICC. Highly doubt Australia has won a fair play award in any sport, ever.

Ray give me a hug sounds like you need some love... Awwww there there chin up. Did those Nasty Aussies bowl underarm 30 years ago. Still not over it. Sweetly you really got to let it go, it's bad for your health
@ray -its highly unlikely anyone on any side of any ditch will take your comments seriously any more...
Much the same could be said for the NZ team (albeit in truth unlike your comment)How is the match fixing going????? Maybe you better get that sorted before you make comments about anyone cheating.....
No way. Only Amla,AB and Steyn would make a combined side
Neither side has got much out of their top 3 in this series other than Warner. You're right about the tail though - has been a strength of Australian sides since Bob Simpson got the bowlers to take their batting seriously.
Patience. There's no "fat lady with a viking helmut in sight", yet. A lesson for Aus batsmen too, perhaps?
Warner would be in mine. Aggressive, dynamic and consistent. In fact, he would be number 1 in the world right now.
So...Early days yet, but where does Siddle now fit and, indeed, if Watson doesn't fire with the bat, where does he sit? How/if does that affect Siddle? And vice-versa?

Siddle won't be selected to replace Watson. He might get back in if Harris' surgery doesn't do the job. I would suggest Watson did exactly what was required with the bat - 40 runs at better than a run a ball just before the rain arrived. I'm not a big Watson fan but he finally is batting in the right spot.
Come on get Faf and the rest will follow quickly
David sometimes mouthing of can really backfire. Might just help these two to focus and be more determined. I was wondering if the pounding Clarke took made him focus more and become more determined
I don't have a problem with the fielders telling batters off for picking up the ball to return it to the opposing team. It's them against us and absolutely no crossing that line.
David I agree with you. Stop mouthing of and just get on with it. Bit of banter is fine but lately our boys can go over the top
Rhino is a true pro. His Australia's version of Dale Steyn and he always finds a way and never stays down long. It's looking good at the moment.
Says a lot about why SA have ranked 1 for so long. At 4 down we still can't relax as the two players batting now are quite capable of making big 100s. Critical to break them up and ideally get both out.
Disagree Dave,If it's not the done thing to appeal for handling ball, then it shouldn't be the don thing for batsmen to handle it.
If it's not the done thing to appeal for handling ball, then it shouldn't be the don thing for batsmen to handle it.
Fair enough, he shouldn't have picked it up. But the Aussies certainly weren't appealing. They were abusing him!
Takes me back to my cricket days. I was square leg umpire my brother on 83. Blocked the ball. It stopped dead at his feet so he picked It up, threw to the bowler they appealed. Worst feeling ever nearly caused a fight between two lowly teams lol
Sure, but if I was the captain I would be giving him a gob-full too!"If you don't want us to appeal, don't *blessing-well* touch it!'Having played some (low) grade cricket myself, I'd have been having a chat to him about it. It was less about the sledging than the batsman opening himself up to it. Walk away and let the fielding team expend the energy. In my opinion....;-)

I agree David. Bogan attitude/ behaviour onfield "is just not cricket" - people need to be respectful of each with their mouthes, even on a frontline sportsfield. But I disagree with you completely Ray of NZ. This is national frontline sport, and actions MUST speak MUCH louder than words - if a team has punishing bowler, use them, including "bodyline". Otherwise it would be like asking the ABs to go easy on the scrums Ray, in case someone might get a back pain?
JH,You make the analogy of the AB's going easy in scrums? That's just silly.Like it or not sledging has ALWAYS been a part of sport, it's just modern cameras and audio that have given us an isnight to it. If you don't think that the ABs sledge on their way to a scrum, knowing that they can both pump themselves and intimidate the opposition at the same time, you're incredibly naive.Sledging has it's place. Let the umpires control it and teams live and die by it.As Michael Holding has said "Intimidation, both verbally and physically is an integral part of fast bowling".(Or words to that effect)

yep, true Pete75, I might be naive in my expectation for a certain code of coduct (respect) amongst gladiatorial combatants. The bogan verbal interactions David was referring to within the AUS team (but as you said, everyone is doing it), where actions should speak louder than abuse, doesn't necessarily make it "right" or "appealing" to all spectators. So why not move up a notch, and arm sportsmen with lethal weapons? I'm certain verbal interactions would be far more measured and respectful when the stakes are ultimate? What's so different with sporty sport, where stakes are not ultimate?.
Lot's of talk about "sledging", as happens when Australia wins.I respect our South African opponents . I respect them much better than to ascribe some "nasty talk" or "foul language" to whatever this result might be.Anyone noticed how Haddin has started to call his bowlers "boy"?

Can we stop with the bodyline Mitch?
This is test cricket mate, the Saffa's don't mind dishing it out and they won't complain about copping it either.
Inn Bodyline? Has Clarke set the same field as back then. Is Mitch bowling bouncers every ball?
David. How's the wicket looking. Radio commentators said last night Lyon may bag a few. What's your thoughts today?
It's not going spin if you bowl half volleys and, unfortunately, Lyon has been overpitching so far today. Anyway, the quicks, particularly Harris are on top and doing a great job.
I love this coverage you guys do. It saves many a fight over the TV and also covers for not having Foxtel. Love your work.
Love your work too, Vlad!
It's hard to cheer for a wicket when Amla is batting. Pure class and poetry in motion. Wish he was an Aussie, but then again VB wouldn't like a man with his morals and beliefs.
Was thinking the same earlier Chuck. Something about Amla you got to love his talent and way he comes across. Class on and of the field. As much as I love it when his on fire thank god his out
Whats the follow on target and will Pup enforce it?
294 is it not? And no, don't think he would unless they were bowled out for less than 100.
I actually think if the forecast is for more rain interruptions Clarke will force the follow on if he has the choice.
Pattinson has been disappointing, serving up pies like it's in fashion. Should of Bird instead.
Yet he has a wicket and the radio commentators are praising him. By the way I would of gone with Bird. I think Patto is doing the job asked
The saffas fragile top order is failing yet again to the Aussies strike bowlers. The obvious question is will Clarke enforce the follow on? Aussies to win by an innings.
I think Australia missed a trick . There was a feather on hotspot , first ball from Harris
Time for Dennis Lillee Jnr to take a leaf out of Morkels' book and unleash 150km body blows on Amla and de Villers
There's that man Ryan Harris again and this time no less than Hashim Amla . Go Australia
Harris needs to bring his length back a bit he is getting slammed
The SA commentators show a lot of man love for AB de Villiers. Bit squirmy guys.
Petersen was getting away , good break by Johnson. Now we just need another wicket from Rhino before lunch
Rhino must have heard you Amla BOWLED. What a way to get such a quality player. Can we dare to believe we will win?
Sorry to stray. Are there any ugly woman that go to the cricket in SA? Makes it almost bearable watching Australia being on top!
My Safa friends say there are no ugly women in South Africa.
Maybe but I bet there aren't that many who can down a pot while smoking a ciggy like my Aussie missus can. Now that's a woman!
this is fascinating from Sth Africa. Rather than grind towards a draw, they have decided to counter-attack. Peterson charging Watson and taking him from off to fine leg leaves him impotent. Lyon attacked first over. Pattinson carted.Attack as the best form of defence, or a genuine attempt to set up the game (remembering they cruised at 6 an over in Perth, albeit against our b-graders)?

When you have the best top 5 batsman in the world like the Saffas you should be able to counter attack, especially at home. Can the Aussies now split this pair before to much damage is done
yes we can!
My second son is due in few hours and it's hard to decide which one I'm more excited about! The new baby or an Aussie victory!
You can always have another baby!
Probably best to get excited about the one thing that will definitely be happening. Might also make your mrs a bit happier!
If we win this one, the boy will be (middle) named after our MOM. Right now it looks like Michael, David or Brad... haha!
Got to hand it to Peterson his taking it right up to our bowlers. Hope we get him out soon otherwise he may do a Warner and make a quick 100
Watto doing his job again; giving the strike bowlers a rest while he restricts the runs. And then he'll take a wicket.
0/18 off three overs. Not amongst his best spells. No swing, slow track, nothing there for Watto, lets Saffies out from under the pressure.
Rudy Fair go mate. Peterson was hitting everyone about when he was in. Lets see how Watson goes the rest of his overs. Did you know he hold the record for the quickest 5-. Took it at this ground 5 wickets in 19 balls. That is one of many reasons fox in the hat has said they should play him. He got a quick 40 as asked now the bowling lets see
Is it hoping to much for SA to be 3- at Lunch
Got 1 better 4 - at lunch. Now to be greedy. Lets have them 8- at Tea
2/42 chasing 494. Where's Hodster to predict Australia's imminent demise?
2/42 chasing 494.

I'm here! Glad you were missing me. I do love the way you are crowing so early. Plenty of action still to come, just hope you don't end up with egg in your face!
...as opposed to the full English breakfast that is still dripping off the Poms faces. No one can take that away from us. Btw, when I can't sleep I just close my eyes and count English wickets. It really works.
@hodster ,yeah glad your back, now I might go and play with some trucks on the road for more fun!!!
Hodster win lose or draw Aussies can crow. Playing the top team in SA and have it become a 3rd Test decider is a great effort. Aus on the rise regardless. England hurriedly searching the world for imports so they don't fall below Bangladesh in the rankings . Go team United Nations oops um England
Oh don't worry Hodster, I wasn't missing you, I was just enjoying our team of "clowns" throwing egg all over your face. Three down now Hodster. Reckon you can avoid the follow on?I don't.

Wow I am sensing some vitriol from my Aussie friends. Lucky I've got a thick skin or you guys ganging up on me could be upsetting! Granted you've had a decent few months , and I have really enjoyed the previous few years but me thinks you might be getting a bit too far ahead of your selves. We all know you're a fickle bunch, most of you were calling for clarkey to go not so long ago now he's the messiah! Warner is still a complete liability and a one day bogan. Mj has excelled , your top order are fragile.youre Not a number one team boys so calm down and actually win the match before you start squawking about yourselves!
Hodster, I need you mate. All your friends have run off (halfway through the Adelaide test) never to be seen again. If you don't comment I can't gloat. Now, that is one thing I've learnt well from my English friends although they've gone all quiet now.
Hodster last time I called for Clarke to go was a week before Ponting quit the Captaincy. Since then he became Captain and has not set a foot wrong. His form slump was not very long. Was probably due after a stellar few years.
Hodster if Warners great great grandmother was English you'd try to get him to play for England. Can't fault his innings this Test only one chance given, the one he got out on
Hey Guys Stop rising to Hodster's click-bait. His cricket knowledge and commentary brings little cricket or social benefit to the board. He's just having what he calls is fun. Don't indulge him.
Pattinson you little beauty. Awesome glove work by Haddin. His kept better than ever since returning to the team.
Sorry just logged in. Whats te weather forecast for today?
Welcome back Patto. What a catch Haddin !
David Im wondering with the current conditions if pup might try Watson as first change
Gut feeling wickets are going to be shared evenly among our bowlers this innings
Hail Michael Clarke. He played one of the greatest test innings here and silenced his critics yet again. Love to see those Clarke haters get one up 'em.Very good captaincy, too.
It's time for Graeme Smith to retire. He's got nothing left at test level.
Funny some were saying that about Clarke until this Test. Smith is a class batsman 1 bad series in a 3 Test series does not mean a thing. Players of his class always come back. Lets hope its not in the next innings
Come on Armchair. Seriously? Who was saying Clarke should retire? G. Smith on the other hand......
Dick a few in blog sites I read no one of note. Just making a point on Smiths behalf. Love seeing the SAffa Captain struggle but his form can return just like Clarkes. I posted a response to one of ou regular pommy baggers the other day saying no ex players or media have called for Clarke to resign when he said many Aussies had been bagging Clarke. Lets enjoy while we do well but to say Smith should be sacked geez
This South African team is spineless. Happy to score at 1 run per over, hoping for more rain - essentially playing for a draw. Hope Mitch makes every ball a 160kph bouncer!
Cricket Tragic. How about some credit to our bowlers. They did the same to the Poms. Bowled tight, backed up by good fielding, kept the pressure up resulting in wickets when players play a poor shot from frustration. It's no secret Boof and the bowlers spoke about it during the Ashes
Yes, Peterson 50 off 50 balls. Lucky he's only playing for a draw.
Yep, at 4.17 runs per over...oops, make that 4.29 runs per over you would have to say your comment is pretty dumb oh Mr Cricket Tragic...
Righto, kiddies. Let's play the ball, not the man!
Nothing wrong with a bit of sledging in the cricket commentary
Hope Harris has a day out. His deserved better this series than the results show
Australia certainly the better pace attach so far .Great discipline and line .
Ryan Harris has got Smith again . One captain redeemed himself, the other has not .yet. No Amla at 3, hello whats happening
Gotta love the gutsy, front foot declaration. And the swing in the air.
Would have loved to see pup make 200. Guess if forecast is for more rain this Declaration is our one shot at winning. Can Pattinson now step up and be a key
