White strikes form before crucial clash

February 12, 2012

With some much-needed runs and a personal record looming, Cameron White now has his sights on leading Victoria into the Sheffield Shield final.

White, whose batting form has been below-par all summer, scored 147 for his Melbourne club side Richmond against Prahran on Saturday.

The 28-year-old's national contract would appear in jeopardy after his difficult summer and losing the Australian Twenty20 captaincy.

But White's timely return to form comes as he prepares to break Bill Lawry's long-standing record for captaining Victoria on the most occasions in the Bushrangers' Shield clash with South Australia, starting today at the MCG.

''It was just great to spend some time in the middle and the game obviously starts [today], so it was good practice,'' White said yesterday ahead of his 57th first-class match leading Victoria.

''For whatever reason [on Saturday], it seemed to work out. It was nice to build an innings.''
