Henderson, as well as three other Canberra riders are set to be part of Australia's cycling team at the London Games - in three separate disciplines.
Caroline Buchanan (BMX), Henderson, (mountain-biking), and Chloe Hosking and Michael Rogers (road race) were all named on the Australian Olympic team bound for London.
Henderson's partner and coach, Daniel McConnell, who has become an adopted Canberran in the last few years was also selected as the men's representative mountain biker.
It was ''hugely exciting times'' in the Henderson household yesterday, according to Rebecca's mother, Leanne. Her phone had been ringing non-stop as the news broke of Henderson's Olympic debut.
''She's known for a couple of days,'' Leanne Henderson said. ''She's good at keeping secrets.'' Henderson and McConnell are currently in Canada competing in World Cup events.
''I would expect that Bec and Dan would still be asleep now,'' Leanne told The Canberra Times last night.
''They'll awake to the official news and the barrage of comments on their Facebook and emails.''
Henderson achieved her first World Cup podium finish with a bronze medal in the under-23 event in Houffalize, Belgium, in April.
The 20-year-old is ranked second in the under-23 standings, but 55th in the seniors and is considered a medal contender for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
Nevertheless, her family are getting ready for a trip to London.
''We'll take Rebecca's gran over, she's been a huge support to Rebecca, and this might be the last Olympics that gran might be fit enough.''
Flights will be booked this week, but there are more pressing problems.
''We've actually got to track down some tickets - all the mountain bike tickets are sold out.''
There were no surprises with the inclusion of world No.2, Caroline Buchanan in the BMX event, but the announcement came as a relief nonetheless.
''It's nice to be able to officially say I'm an Olympian,'' the 21-year-old said.
''I kind of knew from the selection criteria after winning my first World Cup in Norway this season, and just having such a consistent successful season and going on to win the time trial at the world championship as well, that I would make the team, but it definitely wasn't easy.''
Unlike Henderson's family, Buchanan's entourage had already booked for London.
''My mum and dad will be coming over, and my dad is from Wales so his mum - my nanny, my nanny's friend, my manager, my old mechanic and my boyfriend, so I'll have a good little support crew,'' Buchanan said.
Buchanan will be joined by Lauren Reynolds, with world No.1 Sam Willoughby headlining the men's BMX team.
Rogers will head to his fourth Olympic Games in a men's road race team which also includes Cadel Evans, Stuart O'Grady, Matt Goss and Simon Gerrans. Hosking was named in her first Olympic team, with selectors entrusting the 21-year-old sprinter to do the job.
