England beats Aussie women in one-dayer
England scored a comprehensive 56-run victory over Australia in the first of five women's one-day cricket internationals at the MCG.
After being sent in, all of the England batters got starts, with Lydia Greenway (48 not out), Jenny Gunn (48) and Sarah Taylor (44) making the most significant contributions in an imposing total of 6-233.
Shelly Nitschke claimed the bowling honours for Australia with 2-38 from 10 overs.
But the home side did not help its cause by dropping several catches.
The only shining light for the Australian batting lineup came from 17-year-old sensation Ellyse Perry, who top-scored with 40 before Australia were finally dismissed for 177 in the final over.
Perry had been the star in Australia's victory over England in the Twenty20 clash on Friday, played as the curtain-raiser to the big game between Australia and India.
The second of the women's one-day internationals is at the MCG on Monday before the series moves to Sydney.
