So, Sydney hang on, staggering towards the finish line after Tomi Juric scored a cracker to make it tight in the last quarter. Del Piero had one of his better games for the Sky Blues, with admirable support from the likes of the equally impressive Antonis and Ryall.

Adelaide were all over the place - at times excellent, at times clueless. They showed good heart to come back and will be delighted at the debut of Tomi Juric who scored an early contender for goal of the round with his first touch in A-League football.

Good news for both Sydney teams, with Sydney FC going into the top 5, while the Wanderes have a chance to break away from Adelaide. A record five straight at home for Sydney, that caps off an excellent day for the club on the back of the signings of Neill and Farina.

Thanks for your company. See you next time.

Comical effort from Fabio there, who charged into the box on a breakaway, but lost control and had to leap over the covering tackle. Not a great moment for the flying Brazilian. A cool head and a better touch, and he's one on one with the keeper. End of story. Sydney should see this one out though with little time left for Adelaide.

Smart play from Chianese there, who turned down an attacking break to hold up the ball and play it back to support. That will help eat up the clock. Good composure from the sub

We'll have four added minutes here. That will feel like 40 for Farina's men.

Sydney FC are having a case of the wobbles here, and there is still a good five to go. They are desperate for the final whistle. It looks as if Juric's belter has taken all of their confidence away in one fell swoop. Reds on the attack through Geronimo and Carrusca. The Reds need to throw everything forward now, but they are remaining calm and keeping their formation.

Corner to Adelaide, but is comes to nothing. Much like at the end of the first half, the home side are fading, as the Reds assert themselves and press forward. A moment of relief for Sydney though as they break upfield and Antonis smashes the ball into a defender with a speculative shot.

Bit of a stink here after Fyfe clatters the most fouled man in the league. It's just a yellow though, and it does not placate the Cove. Nervy moments here, it looked like it was all tied up. The next ten minutes will be a true test of character for the home team. Have they really turned the corner?

Del Piero is dumped in the middle of the pitch, and the ball breaks to the new man Juric with ADP prone in the centre circle. He has a dig, but doesn't quite catch it right. Fair ply though, he's earned the right to pull the trigger.

What a finish, remember that name. And Adelaide have another chance! But it's into the side netting. We're all set up here for a blockbuster finish here in Sydney. Don't go anywhere.

GOAL TO THE REDS! Tomi Juric has had an instant impact. Absolutely cracking finish from a nothing long ball that Griffiths struggled to deal with. Now we have a game on.

Another free-kick to Sydney after their marquee man is bundled over as he changed direction. Bit of a harsh call then, ADP seemd to buy that one off Barbiero. ADP lines up another, and brings a save low down at the post from Galekovic. Good save.

That man Del Piero again shuffles and teases his way down the left towards the corner flag, but his dipping ball into the box is met by only Adelaide defenders. He held the ball up as long as he could then, but he desperately needed someone to make a run. Chianese comes on for the impressive Blake Powell and Ramsay is replaced by Juric for the Reds. Lets see what the new signing has to offer.

This could be a painful 20 minutes here for Adelaide, who look like they have run out of ideas. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if Sydney push on and get a third here. Another Reds move breaks down on the right. They need to score soon if they are to have any chance here.

Yellow for McFlynn, the most yellowed player in the league. So no surprises then - Sydney score 2+ goals, and McFlynn gets a ticket. Standard.

Good work again from Antonis leads to a corner, and from the resulting set-piece, the ball is bundled in via Griffiths and Blake Powell who swivels and stabs it home. That's curtains from the visitors who defended like headless chooks when Del Piero's ball came in.

Another free-kick from Del Piero skips a couple of feet wide. Looks like Eugene Galekovic would have covered that, but it had a lovely flight and curve on it. Adelaide have got to stop fouling around the box, ADP has his sights on today.

And Del Piero goes close after great work from goalscorer Antonis, flashing the ball across the goal. So close. One more here and Adelaide are buried. Sydney need to keep their focus and pepper the box.

Corner to Sydney after a powerful run from Ryall into the Adelaide box. it results in a corner - but Del Piero can't find Tiago with the set piece, and that man Boogaard heads clear again.

This result looks good for the Wanderers too, who will take on the Melbourne Victory tonight down south. Good work from McFlynn as he tidies up the mess left by Fabio.

Lazy defending from Griffiths there, who swung a leg at a clearance and nearly got caught out. They musn't switch off here, or they will be punished. There are plenty of Reds players who would be delighted to pck up any scraps.

Nasty looking knock there for Fabio, whose ankle and knee get dragged underneath him in an ugly tackle. The Brazilian is down receiving treatment. Or not. He's up again. That looked like a sore one, but it's a miraculous recovery, and the ball is back with Sydney FC who are heading for fifth on the ladder if this stays as it is.

Adelaide have responded well here, and are taking the game right back to Sydney, setting up with a freekick in a dangerous position. And it's straight to Janjetovic again. Nice easy stroll for the Sydney FC keeper so far.

AND IT'S TERRY ANTONIS FOR SYDNEY FC. The youngster has his first for the club, as his left-footed drive from outside the box clips former Sky Blue Iain Fyfe, and there's nothing Galecovic can do. Great start for Sydney. Fortune favours the brave.

Peter Triantis hasn't come out for the second half, with the player withdrawn as a precaution after picking up a knee injury. He has been replaced by Paul Reid.

And we're off again for the second half. CHANCE! There's an early free-kick for Del Piero to line up as the visitors continue to niggle. He hits a dipping delivery across the goal, and with Galecovic beaten, it comes back off the bottom of the post. That one moved in the air. Supreme.

No goals here at halftime, but good chances at both ends. Sydney dominated the midfield, and worried the visitors down the channels, but Adelaide finished the half strongly and will be the more pleased of the two sides with the scoreline so far.

Join us in the second half as Sydney FC bid to get back into the top six. Can Adelaide put a dent in their finals hopes? Intriguing game so far - one for the purists.

Adelaide are finishing this half very strongly here, as they sense tiredness creeping into the Sky Blues' ranks. Sydney are doing their nasty trick of switching off at the end of the half and the Reds are pushing forward, probing for a weakness.

Chance for Adelaide! Vidosic rises at the back post after great work from Carrusca. Rhyan Grant is there to greet the hanging cross though and defuse the danger. Big chance for Adelaide there just before halftime - that cross was begging for a bullet header.

Nigel Boogaard has been excellent at the back for Adelaide. He heads away another dangerous-looking ball in from the home team. So important to have a reliable big man at centre-back. And Carrusca has clipped abother set of heels. He's got to be a sneeze away from a yellow after that one.

Del Piero plays in Grant down the right, and the ball pings across the box, evading everyone. But the ref has called it back for a foul by Ramsey. Adelaide are giving Sydney far too much space in the final third. Danger here for the Reds.

Good attacking position for Adelaide here, but Carrusca hits the free-kick straight into the welcoming arms of Janjetovic. And then the Argentinian man gives the most fouled man in the league another bruise. Poor Alessandro.

Great skill from Del Piero as he toys with Malik. He's been superb today - would you bet against him making the difference tonight? He is looking fit and hungry, really starting to relish his central role. Surely he'll stay for another year? - especially if Sydney make the finals.

So all square here after half an hour. An intriguing game at Allianz, albeit a slow-burner. Sydney are in control, with Adelaide showing glimpses on the counter, especially down the right channel. This one needs a goal to ignite the tie. And I reckon it's coming before half-time. Just don't let McFlynn shoot.

Lovely ball from the Italian megastar as the Sky Blues pour forward. Antonis puts in a teasing cross, but the Reds deal with it admirably, putting it out for a corner. McFlynn attempts a volley from outside the box off the scraps from the resulting corner, but it is hideous.

Oooh rabona from Fabio. That was sliiiick from the Brazilian, and the crowd greeted it accordingly. Del Piero played it to the Brazilian who pulled out the trick that keeps on giving.

Effort from Galecovic with a technically superb hit from the second-phase ball from the corner. Not quite Scholes-esque, but lovely contact. That deserved a goal. Sydney are upping the pressure here in Homebush.

Antonis makes space for himself dead in front of goal with a drop of the shoulder, but it goes harmlessly wide. He'll be waiting a long time for his first goal if he keeps that up. Chance for McFlynn, but his drive clips a defender's heel and goes out for a corner.

OOh. Big chance for Sydney FC, after Del Piero draws Malik into a foul on the edge of the box. It comes to nothing, as ADP hits it harmlessly into the wall after an elaborate step-over to fool the wall. Wasted opportunity there, that was in the Italian's range.

Fabio fires one in low and hard to Grant, who controls well, but he's rightly caught offside. A considered start to this tie, very measured from both sides. Grant catches Carrusca on the heels. The Argentine makes the most of it, but it's just a warning for the Sydney man.

Bowles rinses Fabio again, but the ball in is very ordinary from Dario Vidosic. That was a decent opening for the visitors, but comes to nothing. Adelaide are just starting to settle into this game after a lack of possession early on. There's goals in this one.

Great effort from Daniel Bowles there, charging down the right, combining with Jeronimo and almost getting on the end of the return. That's much better from the Reds as they announce themselves in this tie. Bowles is causing Fabio all sorts of trouble. He's lightning.

Adelaide are looking to do the double over Sydney for the first time tonight. They'll have to get a foot on the ball though if they wish to do so. Del Piero is pulling the strings here in the heart of the pitch as expected. They'll do well to sign him up again.

Sydney are set up in front of the Cove, who are in good voice following big news about the signings of Farina and Neill this morning. Three points here would see the home team jump back into the top six, with room to spare. Adelaide are giving the ball away cheaply - and they haven't had much of it to begin with. Griffiths is settling in nicely in the middle, he'll be looking for a big game today. Chance for Sydney after a great ball across the box from Fabio. Blake Powell gets in front of the defender but can't connect.

Two great rivals out here today, with both teams all square after 25 meetings. Nothing much doing in the opening couple of minutes as the Sky Blues spread it around, just settling in to this one. Noisy crowd here, geeat atmosphere on a warm afternoon in Sydney. Early chance as Del Piero worries the Adelaide defence, but Anthony Golec shepherds it beautifully back to his keeper.

No Emerton or Abbas today, with Antonis and McFlynn switching in. Not a bad second best eh? Otherwise, it's pretty much the usual suspects. Tomi Juric is on the bench for Adelaide, it'll be good to see whether the Sydney-born youngster can crack it in the A-League.

We're all set here, with the teams taking to the pitch. Will Sydney be able to continue their impressive run of late, or will the visitors do the old smash 'n grab and leave the Cove blue? I reckon it's going to be a tight one, both teams to score with Sydney to sneak it and cement their position in the top six.

In case you missed it earlier this afternoon, Socceroos' legend Lucas Neill has agreed terms to sign with Sydney FC, with the Sky Blues nipping in ahead of the Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar.

Sydney FC v Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium, 5.30pm

Head to Head: Sydney FC 11, drawn 3, Adelaide 11

Last clash: Adelaide 3 bt Sydney 0 at Hindmarsh Stadium, Dec 2012

Tab Sportsbet: Sydney FC $2.25, draw $3.50, Adelaide $2.85

AAP writes: Sydney FC finally clawed their way back into the top six with a gutsy 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar and this looks a good opportunity to give their finals hopes another big boost.

The Reds scored their first win under Michael Valkanis as they beat Melbourne Victory 1-0 at home but they remain vulnerable away from home, losing four and drawing one of their past five.

Sydney’s cause is not helped by Brett Emerton and Ali Abbas joining Joel Griffiths on the suspension list but they do have Terry McFlynn and Yairo Yau back.

Valkanis will have to watch the match from the stands after receiving a one-game ban for abusing the referee last week.

Key: Even at 38, Alessandro Del Piero continues to prove an out-and-out match winner and his form and fitness looks ominous heading towards the finals.

    Tip: Sydney FC
