But while Nikolai Topor-Stanley may miss out on a priceless piece of memorabilia, the A-League All Stars defender will not be overawed when taking on one of the world's biggest clubs.
The Canberra product is doing his best to remain calm before running out to face the Red Devils in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 80,000 at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
The English Premier League champions boast some of the biggest names on the planet and a bulging trophy cabinet that grows almost every year.
And while Topor-Stanley will try to trade shirts when the full-time whistle sounds, the Western Sydney Wanderers star will not be shattered if he gets turned down.
''I'm sure there'll be a massive queue, I'm just another one in line,'' Topor-Stanley said. ''I'll ask the question, but if not, there's no shame in keeping my shirt. It's something I'll remember forever.''
The Tuggeranong junior has enjoyed a rapid turnaround in fortunes after being without a club less than 18 months ago.
His future was uncertain when the Newcastle Jets hit financial turmoil, but he received a lifeline from the Wanderers. Topor-Stanley repaid their faith, becoming one of their best players on a fairytale run to the grand final.
He now faces the prospect of containing one of the best strikers in the world, Dutch star Robin van Persie.
''I get the white-line fever, so once I get out there it doesn't matter who I'm up against,'' Topor-Stanley said. ''I haven't competed against Man United before so I don't know what will happen.
''But I've competed against so-called superstars of the game before and it hasn't really got to me.''
The 28-year-old dismissed suggestions the withdrawal of marquee trio Alessandro del Piero, Shinji Ono and Emile Heskey had taken the shine off the A-League All Stars team, backing those who had been called up to rise to the occasion. The timing of the match contributed to those scratchings, with the rest of the All Stars team in the early stages of pre-season.
''I'm lacking a bit of match fitness, but everyone's in the same boat,'' Topor-Stanley said.
''Their last result in Thailand [where Manchester United lost 1-0] shows anything can happen. This game against United is a massive opportunity to showcase what Australian football is about.''
Topor-Stanley will return to Canberra as part of the Wanderers' build-up to the new campaign when they take on Canberra Olympic at the AIS on August 14.
