Ellie Brush, Caitlin Cooper and twins Ashleigh and Nicole Sykes have all briefly enjoyed the honour of wearing the green and gold, before it was abruptly taken away.
But Canberra United's incredible W-League season looks set to hand some of its stars a deserved opportunity to revive their international careers.
Matildas coach Tom Sermanni was an interested spectator at United's 1-0 semi-final win over Melbourne on Saturday.
He revealed the form of defenders Brush and Cooper, plus both Sykes, had them well placed to press for national selection.
The quartet boast just six senior Matildas caps between them, with Nicole Sykes yet to make her debut.
''When you look at Caitlin and Ellie they're very reliable, have a great partnership at the back and read the game very well,'' Sermanni said.
''They've had solid seasons and have ben involved in our national team before.
''The Sykes twins have really benefited from having the chance to play W-League the last three seasons.
''Their confidence on the ball, decision making and technique have all improved significantly this year.''
United skipper Brush and Cooper boast just one Matildas cap apiece, in 2009 and 2007 respectively.
Ashleigh Sykes made four national appearances in 2008, where she scored goals against the Phillippines and Singapore.
It has a long time on the outer, but United's unbeaten 11-match run is difficult to ignore.
''When you're looking for players for the [Australian] team it's a range of things, you don't open a textbook and get an answer,'' Sermanni said.
''It's down to what players myself as a coach want in the team, the type of team you want and how you want them to play.
''These are the factors you look at, and then you find which players can fit into that mould.''
Sermanni has watched a handful of United's games this season, and has noted the incredible comraderie eminating from the camp.
''What you sense in the team is a great deal of confidence in each other and [Canberra coach] Jitka [Klimkova] has created a tremendous environment,'' he said.
''We've seen a lot of players come to the team that have played better than ever, you can't think of a Canberra player that's had a bad season.''
