Birdie-birdie finish for Brendan Jones at British Open

Date: July 20 2012

Canberra’s Brendan Jones finished in a flurry of birdies to post a solid one-under par at the British Open this morning.

Jones is tied in 22nd position, five shots behind fellow Aussie and Open leader Adam Scott, after the first round on the challenging Royal Lytham and St Annes course.

The 37-year-old started well and birdied the par-three fifth, before double-bogeying the following hole.

He recovered well with back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes to get back in the red.

Jones’s round looked to have taken a turn for the worse after he dropped two shots to slip to one-over the card with two holes to play, but he dug deep to turn  things around.

Birdies on the 17th and 18th meant he finished at  one-under and perfectly placed to make the cut and play all four days.

Jones is the first group off today, teeing off with Bob Estes and Steven O’Hara at 3.30pm AEST.

Open-leader Scott will tee off at 10.43pm.
