Golfing for a cause

Golfing for a cause

There were more slices than you'd find at a pizzeria and eagles were harder to spot than an honest politician.

But the numbers on the scorecard only painted half the story as a host of Australian sporting identities converged on Canberra for the first annual Ricky Stuart Foundation Celebrity Pro-Am.

While 54 professional golfers, including seasoned veterans Peter O'Malley, Lucas Parsons and Canberra duo Brendan Jones and Matt Millar, teed up for a share of $30,000 prizemoney, the real action at Royal Canberra was among the hackers on hand to raise awareness for autism.

It's a cause close to the heart of Canberra Raiders great and current NSW Origin coach Stuart, with his 14-year-old daughter Emma having lived with autism her whole life.

He was blown away by the support, with footballers, cricketers and even television icons Deborah Hutton and Kerri-Anne Kennerley, flying in for the event.

''I'm lucky I've got a lot of friends and a lot of guys behind the scenes who have put a lot in to make this day happen,'' Stuart said.

''It's very important to me and it's very important to a lot of people. ''The most important part for me is the awareness for disabilities, not just autistic children. We need to get right behind them more. This is just one great way to show we all care.''

Sporting greats Brad Fittler, Mark Gasnier, Wendell Sailor, George Gregan, Allan Border and Stuart MacGill all teed off, while Canberra's Nikki Campbell recovered from her Australian Open meltdown on Sunday to win the four-ball stableford event on 53 points with Juri Damaszet, Shane Radnell and Mitch Brown.
