Campbell fired a final round 66 to finish second, three shots behind Frenchwoman Joanna Klatten at the Oatlands course in Sydney on Sunday.
Klatten made nine birdies in a flawless, course-record display to finish at 16-under 200 ahead of Campbell on 13 under par.
The NSW Open is the first major event on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf circuit.
Campbell will fly out on Monday to begin preparations for the New Zealand Open, starting on Friday in Christchurch.
Following on are the Women's Australian Masters on the Gold Coast (February 6-9), the Women's Australian Open in Melbourne (February 13-16) and the Victorian Open (February 20-23).
''It helps build confidence for sure, but every week's different,'' Campbell said.
''I just want to keep trying to play well and get into contention for a few more events.
''I thought I would need seven under today, but turns out I would have needed better than that. It was good to have a chance to win.''
Going into the final day at seven under, Campbell made a flying start with an eagle on the par five, fourth hole.
She then strung three straight birdies from the sixth hole to the eighth to be five-under for the day and -12 for the tournament.
Her momentum slowed on the back nine, eight pars and a solitary birdie on the par three, 12th hole not enough to stay in contact with the red-hot Klatten.
It was Klatten's second professional tour victory. The other was at the 2012 Victorian Women's Open.
Klatten's triumph followed a good season on the Ladies European Tour, where she was 13th on the money list last year.
''It was fantastic,'' Klatten said. ''I have to say it was one of my best rounds of golf ever. ''I have shot nine-under before as an amateur, but this one felt like I was in perfect control of my game and my emotions, so I am extremely happy.''
Minjee Lee won the leading amateur medal on 11-under-par and tied for fifth with overnight leader Lindsey Wright and Kristie Smith.
Crowd favourite Laura Davies finished 19th at five-under.
