Number cruncher ready to take on world's best

January 16, 2012

It's not often the world of accountancy trumps the glitz and glamour of professional sport but for Lauren Stensrud life as a pro golfer just didn't add up.

Stensrud prefers the structured world of the nine-to-five grind but come Friday she will get a taste of life on the pro tour when she competes in her first Royal Canberra Ladies Classic.

The 29-year-old amateur golfer has been invited to take part in the Australian Ladies Professional Golf tournament after a solid year, winning the district championship and club championship at Queanbeyan Golf Club.

She's looking forward to the occasion but won't be tempted to turn her back on financial planning.

''I guess living out of a suitcase never [excited me] ... it would be good to travel around the world but that life's just not for me. I don't know that I'd make a lot of money out of it anyway,'' Stensrud said.

The unknown amateur could be be rubbing shoulders with one of the game's greats - England's Laura Davies.

The thought of being paired with the imposing former world No1 is a little daunting for Stensrud.

''[It'd] probably be intimidating, especially having all those people follow you ... a constant gallery analysing every shot,'' she said.

Accountants are stereotypically sensible types and Stensrud's goals for the Canberra Classic are fittingly modest.

Stensrud was just hoping her knowledge of the course - she's played plenty of rounds at the Canberra club since she took up the game when she was 12 - will help her get around.

''My goal is to break 80 for the first two days,'' she said.

''So I don't have any great expectations, I'm just happy to go and see how it goes.

''That's my goal at the moment and if I play on Sunday as well then that would be awesome.''
