Canberra's Brendan Jones is keen to make up for a frustrating first round at the US Open, in which some strategic mistakes resulted in two double bogeys and three bogeys in an otherwise good round at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

''Bad club decisions and mis-readings of the wind cost me about five shots,'' Jones told The Canberra Times after his opening round of six over par.
''It's just disappointing because I only get the opportunity to play one or two of these events per year and it's not the first time that I've made bad club decisions or got things wrong on the golf course and it's cost shots.''
Jones tees off for round two at six o'clock this morning, Canberra time, tied for 93rd and in the group behind leader Michael Thompson (four-under par).
Jones said he was striking the ball well yesterday, but made a few costly errors.
''My caddy and I just didn't get anything right and I'm just very disappointed to shoot the score that I did … I don't think it's a true reflection of how I played,'' he said.
Only six players broke par on day one, but that didn't lessen the disappointment for Jones.
''I drove the ball very well,'' he said. ''I didn't hit a lot of fairways but I was in the first cut quite a lot, so I was in good positions, but I wasn't hitting the ball close enough to give myself birdie chances.
''As soon as I made one mistake, I'd make double bogey, so that's the frustrating thing. I'm making so many pars really easily, but I hit one poor shot or the wrong club and I'm making double bogey and bogey.
''I don't mind making double bogeys from poor shots, but I'm making bogeys and doubles from good shots, and that's the thing that's hard to handle.''
