Father-son partnership Don and Andrew Ryan look to take hometown cup at Bathurst on legends day

It has been about a year since father and son team Don and Andrew Ryan went into partnership at Bathurst, and they will look to have their biggest day on Sunday.

The partnership only formalised what had been happening for a couple of decades.

"I have been working with dad since I left school, but he wanted to make it a  partnership," Andrew Ryan said. "It is something great we can share in his later years of training and we have had some success."

The Ryans have eight winners as a partnership from their team of four out of Bathurst and three of them will appear on their home track on Sunday, with Nurture looking to give the family its third Bathurst Cup.

"Dad has won it twice with Ecrates, in 1966, and then Wide And Blue, which was his only other runner, in 2000," Ryan said.

"We are going in as a bit of an outsider on Sunday, but it is our local cup and we wanted to have a crack.

"She is a good, honest mare that has run some good races, but the main reason she is there is it is our biggest race. If it was somewhere else, we probably wouldn't be going around."

The Ryans probably have better chances in Annecy – which was their first winner together – in the Central District Championship Preview, and Ave in the Ida Traill Cup.

"They are both looking at the Country Championships if they run well," Ryan said. "It is a great concept for us out in the bush and gives us the chance to run for some great prizemoney against the horses around here.

"Ave is a very honest mare and, with a little bit of luck, she would have a couple more wins. I think we have found a good race for her.

"Annecy has been going well and we decided to wait for this race with her after her last start."

Bathurst Cup day is built as legends day by the club with races named after racing royalty with links to the area, including 1866 Melbourne Cup winner The Barb, the great Tulloch, Bill Aspros and Hugh Bowman.
