High hopes: trainer John Sargent. Photo: Tertius Pickard
The New Zealand mare Abeautifulred will be carrying more than the hopes of her backers who have made her favourite to win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
The five-year-old is in foal to Exceed And Excel, the Darley stallion which also covered the champion racemare Black Caviar earlier in the Australian breeding season.
And by getting in foal, Abeautifulred has already fulfilled one purpose for her trip across the Tasman.
Now it is up to Randwick trainer John Sargent to make sure another one is achieved before her racing career must draw to a close.
''She came over here to get in foal so the owners thought they would see if they could get some black type in Australia while she's here,'' Sargent said.
Under Australian racing rules, mares can race in foal until the 120th day of their pregnancy. Abeautifulred has been well backed in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1400m), firming from $4.60 to the top of the market at $4.
