Teenager Ellen Rixon to take on heroes in Female Drivers Championships

NSW teenager Ellen Rixon is looking forward taking on idols Kate Gath and Kerryn Manning at the inaugural Australian Female Drivers Championships in Launceston next month.

Rixon has only been driving for three years and is closing on her 100th winner. She was selected with Amanda Turnbull, NSW's premier driver, to represent the state.

"It was totally unexpected," Rixon said. "I was lucky enough to represent NSW in the Australian Drivers Championships down in Tassie last year, but it is great to be in the female drivers championship.

"I'm used to driving against older drivers, but to take on Kate and Kerryn is exciting because I used to cheer for them growing up because they were girls."

While Rixon, who works full-time as well as driving, is only starting her career, Manning, Gath and Turnbull will be the favourites for the series as they all have driven more than 1000 winners.

"It comes down to what you draw and giving them the best chance," Rixon said.

The championships will provide a focal point to the end of the Team Teal campaign, where the sport is raising funds and awareness for ovarian cancer research.

"The ladies who have assembled to support the inaugural Australian Female Drivers Championship are world class and speaks volumes of the influence of women in our sport," Harness Racing Australia chairman Michael Taranto said. "[It will put] an exclamation mark on the amazing 2018 Team Teal campaign, which has been running nationally since the beginning of February."

Australian Female Drivers Championships contenders: Kate Gath (Victoria), Kerryn Manning (Victoria), Jocelyn Young (WA), Deni Roberts (WA), Lisa Ryan (SA), Danielle Hill (SA), Natalee Emery (Tasmania), Kristy Grant (Tasmania), Narissa McMullen (Qld), Danielle McMullen (Qld), Amanda Turnbull (NSW), Ellen Rixon (NSW).
