Kyrgios out of Aust Open qualifier

January 12, 2012

Canberra's Nick Kyrgios has lost his opening round match of the Australian Open qualifying tournament in Melbourne today.

In a rain-affected match Kyrgios lost to Frenchman Mathiu Rodrigues 7-6(3) 3-6 2-6.

The loss end's Kyrgios chances of earning a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open, which begins on Monday.

The 16-year-old will still compete in the Australian Open junior event, which begins in the second week of the tournament.

The qualifying event was only the second open-aged tournament that Kyrgios had entered after losing in the quarter-finals of the Australia Open wildcard play-off last month.

The match was originally scheduled for yesterday but had to be postponed due to poor weather.
