Belconnen United is in negotiations to host the world No.161 in a friendly as part of their tour of Australia.
The McKellar Park encounter has been tentatively pencilled in for Wednesday, June 5, and will be against a team consisting a mix of Blue Devils players and others from the Canberra National Premier League competition.
Capital Football chief executive Heather Reid will assist in discussions with Football Federation Australia to help get the match over the line.
It will be a return to familiar surroundings for Malaysia after its 5-0 thumping at the hands of the Socceroos at Canberra Stadium in 2011.
Malaysia is out of the running for next year’s World Cup, but is currently tied for second in its qualifying group for the 2015 Asian Cup, to be held in Australia.
Discussions about a possible Socceroos match in Canberra this year as part of the city’s centenary celebrations are dependent on whether they qualify for the World Cup.
FFA chief executive David Gallop said the focus was on the qualifiers against Japan (June 4), Jordan (June 11) and Iraq (June18) before other games could be scheduled.
Canberra has secured a two-game series involving Australia’s women’s team, the Matildas, and New Zealand on June 13 and 16.
The Blue Devils scored a 2-0 win against Tuggeranong United at McKellar Park on Saturday.
