Desperate for a run three weeks ago, she tore her left hamstring where surgeons had taken a 20-centimetre graft to repair the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament just over two months earlier.

"The only time I cried was when I tore my hammy for the second time, I was like 'I've had enough of this stupid hamstring'," Green said.

"I was just doing some exercises, I was ready to run on the Alter G [gravity treadmill] but I clearly wasn't ready. I was really cranky at the time I was like 'What am I doing? This is really annoying, is it just going to go on me all the time?'.

"I tore it the first time on Anzac Day just taking my shoe off. They say 90 per cent of people do it – that was the only time I was like 'I've had enough of this'."

Grand final weeks in professional sport often throw up a tale of heartache about the athlete who misses out due to injury, form or otherwise, but Green refuses to accept that is her 2017 story.

She's still the club captain, she's barely missed a training session since the injury and she's been to every game – very much a part of the team which has slogged its way through to a shot at the inaugural Super Netball championship.

At 31, Green realises her career is closer to its end than its beginning, yet her attitude has never wavered even when faced with a 10-month recovery in the immediate aftermath of her harrowing injury in round five against Adelaide.

"The first week that I did it a lot of people were telling me 'You know it's only going to get harder', I thought that's fine but it's the way you take it as well, and the way that you react with it," Green said.

"I see a lot of positives coming out of this. I give my body a complete rest, I pretty much give it 10 months off working out but getting everything in place ready for next season.

"I'm not envious but I wish I was out there if that makes sense. Have I been emotional? No.

"I get to learn a whole lot about myself and my teammates and as a leader one of the most critical things to do in these sort of situations is to take a real positive out of it and understand what your teammates need and understand as a long-term injured player what you need as well.

"You don't understand that until you're there."

Green is contracted at the Giants until the end of next season, and remains on track to play round one of 2018.

As for this weekend, she'll take her customary place on the bench next to coach Julie Fitzgerald, offering advice and helping in any way she can.

"She [Fitzgerald] doesn't listen to a word I say, nor should she, I've got no idea," Green said.

"I'm just more of that support network. For me, when the girls come off especially in that midcourt when they're trying to understand a little bit more play, that's where I can help knowing that I've played against those players before.

"That's been really cool to be able to see myself in a different position, in a different role.

"As much as it's been a horrible situation to be in as an athlete, as a netballer you never want to do this injury ever, but I've learnt so much as well and I've actually enjoyed it as sick as that sounds."
