Less than 12 months ago the Sydney-based team didn't even have a name. Now only fellow expansion club Sunshine Coast Lightning stands between the Giants and glory in the first year of this bold new competition.

Netball Australia decided last year it was time to part ways with New Zealand, and the ANZ Championship was disbanded. Three new clubs, Saturday's two grand finalists and Magpies Netball, were formed and Super Netball was born.

It was a gamble but a five-year joint broadcast-sponsorship deal between Suncorp and Channel Nine has helped fund the new competition and it's already paying off.

In a league jam-packed with the world's best players, Fitzgerald's charges are the most eclectic bunch in the entire eight-team competition.

There's a couple of Englishwomen in Jo Harten and Serena Guthrie, the latter who spends her spare time entertaining the playing squad with her impressive DJ skills.

There's Jamie-Lee Price, the daughter of State Of Origin and Canterbury Bulldogs rugby league star Steve, who was lured from New Zealand just as it looked like she might be lost to the Land of the Long White Cloud forever.

Bec Bulley helps patrol things down back. She was retired and happily enjoying motherhood before Fitzgerald sweet-talked her into putting on the bib again, and her one-year-old daughter Indie follows her to each training session and every game.

Sarah Wall was also enticed out of retirement to replace injured captain Kim Green who is still the heart and soul of the team, and also the wife of NSW and former Test cricketer Trent Copeland.

In the shooting end is the towering Kristina Brice, straight out of Rooty Hill and told she'd never succeed in the sport only to have been nursed on the bench by Fitzgerald all season before playing a starring role as a starter in the two finals games.

Also up forward is veteran Susan Pettitt, affectionately known as "Pratts" and arguably in career-best form after returning to the Diamonds this year following a four-year absence from international netball.

"It probably really is an odd bag [of players] but it just clicked from day one," Pettitt said.

"We didn't have the standard team-building sessions and meetings and all that kind of stuff, we kind of just let it happen and it did happen.

"Serena Guthrie's probably the culprit for most of it, she's just on another planet, but she gets the whole group laughing at her most of the time."

The recruitment of Guthrie, who goes against arguably the world's best centre in Laura Langman on Saturday night, has been a masterstroke.

Her unique brand of humour has kept morale high all year, and she'll even play a DJ set at the club's end-of-season gala night next week.

"A motley crew is definitely an accurate word to describe our group, we're definitely a different group of people but it just all kind of seems to work," Guthrie said.

"It's a really powerful thing to be a part of a group like that and it's just grown and grown throughout the whole year. On top of that we're actually having quite a lot of fun because of the characters we've got in the team.

"We've got a great mix of business and serious and a bit of fun in there as well. It's a bit of a bittersweet weekend because you almost don't want it to end, but at the same time you want to go out and get that trophy."
