Young England star Helen Housby has committed to the club alongside Trinidad and Tobago's Sammy Wallace, joining Diamonds mid-courter Paige Hadley and a core of youthful newcomers at the new-look club.

Since losing the ANZ Championship final by two points to the Queensland Firebirds in July the Swifts have lost six players to rival clubs, including Kim Green and Susan Pettitt to Sydney's second team, Giants Netball.

It has meant coach Rob Wright has been forced to assemble a playing roster almost from scratch, something the traditional powerhouse club, now one of the competition's underdogs, has never had to do.

"It's totally new ground," Wright said.

"It's strange in some ways but I probably see it more as just a fantastic opportunity. This new comp has obviously opened up some massive opportunities for the first time to earn some serious money and that's fantastic for women's sport, I wouldn't begrudge any player being able to earn some serious living when you think their playing career in reality is pretty short.

"We're starting again, and that's exciting. It's going to take a bit of time, it's not an overnight thing.

"People and ourselves, we're going to have to be patient around that.

"You look at Helen and Sammy, Helen's 21 and Sammy's 22 and they're going to be absolute superstars of world netball. Our intention is if we can keep them for a while they're going to be something pretty special.

"It's a bit of an unknown for us but I'm always up for a challenge and we've picked a group that we thought is also up to the challenge."

Wright will be heading into more strange territory when the NNL begins next year, coaching against former mentor Julie Fitzgerald who has taken charge of the Giants.

They've been coaching against each other for three years in the ANZ Championship, Fitzgerald having been at the helm of Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic before signing with the Giants, but now they're heading rival clubs in the same city.

Wright did his coaching apprenticeship underneath Fitzgerald, joining the Swifts in 2010 as an assistant before taking on the head role at the start of 2014

"She gave me an opportunity there and I think she's picked an incredible team as well I just think it's fantastic at netball," Wright said.

"It's her ability to actually see the player as the whole, not just the player on court. She really cares about the player on court and off court, her management of people is just second to none and I think that's a massive reason why people want to play for her.

"She's the master of it and I've learned a lot from how she's gone about that, and it's something I've tried to build into my coaching."
