And despite sitting atop the Super Netball table with two wins from as many starts, coach Julie Fitzgerald knows her side must improve again this week with a mouth-watering clash against the premiership-favourite Magpies to come in Melbourne.

Sydney fans must wait five weeks to see their Giants in action again - their only home game in that stretch is in Canberra on March 19, and by then the competition leaders should be much closer to the finished product that was painted by preseason expectation.

They were certainly far too strong in Saturday's game against West Coast in front of a lower-than-expected 5552 fans at the Qudos Bank Arena, who witnessed what resembled a clash of women versus girls for long stretches.

But there remains a lack of polish to the Giants which is still leading to more turnovers than Fitzgerald would like.

"Our combinations are very new and we can only get better and our aim is to be a little bit better every week we play," Fitzgerald said.

"Our understanding is certainly developing but it's got a long way to go."

That cohesion should come in time, there's simply too much talent at the Giants for it not to. And they're still very much gelling as a team after the Quad Series in South Africa and England earlier this year severely interrupted preseason training.

English imports Serena Guthrie and Jo Harten plus recalled Diamond Susan Pettitt all played in the Quad Series, while young gun Kristina Brice travelled with the Australian squad as a training partner. It meant Fitzgerald was missing four of her 10 listed players for a significant chunk of preseason.

"It's definitely a factor, I guess it hurts us more than we'd like to admit in terms of the trainings," Guthrie said.

"With five or six of us just coming into training, you can only do so much with a certain amount of people. As we can get into training a bit more and start to build I think we will move forward for sure."

Brice received plenty of court time on Saturday, replacing Harten at half time as Fitzgerald flexed the shooting muscle at her disposal. The 22-year-old finished with 22 from 24 attempts to go with the 20 she drained in last week's comeback over the Swifts.

Harten (29) and Pettitt (15) and also chipped in to run up the score, but this was against a Fever team many are tipping to prop up the ladder of this inaugural Super Netball season.

Next week's clash against the Magpies boasts 11 players with international experience and looms as a much stiffer challenge than what the Fever produced on Saturday. It'll also likely be harder than the first-round clash with the NSW Swifts, a game the Giants trailed throughout before finishing with a flurry to earn a five-point win.

Five of the Magpies' starting seven players are Australian Diamonds, making them international teammates with Giants shooter Pettitt.

Kimberlee Green and Bec Bulley are both retired Diamonds but boast 116 international caps between them.

"They're a very classy side, they've been named the favourites of the competition and they've got a lot of Diamonds out there," Guthrie said.

"We can definitely take it to them and we'll be looking to make improvements again next week."
