Tuggeranong sounded a warning to its competitors in the opening round of the Canterbury State League netball competition on Friday night with a 60-39 win over Belconnen.

With just a 10-game season, Tuggeranong’s title hopes were also buoyed by the shock loss of defending champions Arawang at the hands of Queanbeyan, 42-35, while Canberra beat South Canberra 61-37.
“It’s a really short competition so it’s really important you hit the ground running, and I think for the girls as well to get that mental edge ... to get that win as well has been absolutely fantastic,” Tuggeranong coach Nicole Bowles said.
Tuggeranong missed the finals last season, but has been boosted by the addition of former Sydney Swifts' player Nadia McDonald and the return of Keeley Rodrigo, Madeline White and Michaley Phokos.
White and Phokos dominated mid court, with Bowles crediting their efforts.
“It’s like they haven’t had a year off, they slotted back into the team, slotted back onto the court really smoothly ... the defensive presence they bring on court is really what helped us out.”
Tuggeranong now has to back up the win with round two being played on Sunday, when it will take on Arawang which will be looking to bounce back from their loss.
