Raiders deny Dugan coverup

The Canberra Raiders have denied trying to cover up Josh Dugan's speeding charge after revelations the NSW star player was caught driving unlicensed and more than 45km/h over the limit.

Dugan's case will be heard before the ACT Magistrates Court on February 16 when it will be alleged he was travelling at more than 105km/h in a 60km/h zone in August.

He is pleading not guilty to the charge and will contest that he was unaware his licence had been suspended.

Dugan trained with the Raiders this morning but didn't speak to the media.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner refused to take questions from journalists but gave a brief statement in which he rejected any insinuation of sweeping the case under the table.

There are reports that the Raiders did not inform the NRL.

''I am aware of the story that was in the paper today about Josh Dugan and his speeding fine,'' Furner said.

''As to the allegation that we tried to hide it from anybody, it was in the police records that he got pulled over for speeding.

''It's my understanding that he didn't know that he had a suspended licence and that's what he'll be contesting next Thursday.

''That's all I've got to say on the matter, it's going to court next Thursday so thanks for coming out.''

Dugan is off contract at the end of the year and is one of the hottest properties in rugby league.

The Raiders are in negotiations to extend the 21-year-old fullback's contract but have to fend off interest from several Sydney clubs.

Dugan has been included in a 30-man squad for the Raiders' trial match with the Melbourne Storm in Albury on Saturday.
