Price was unveiled on Wednesday as the sole female skipper of the six-team series, which begins in February, and the Sydneysider will be a full centimetre shorter than she was when winning a sailing silver medal at the 2012 Olympics after breaking her T12 vertebra.

The Drummoyne product narrowly avoided irreparable spinal damage when she flipped over her handlebars while downhill mountain biking in Thredbo, earning herself a two-week stint in a Canberra hospital.

She avoided surgery but the bone she fractured, the largest of the thoracic vertebrae, was ground down by 30 per cent into the shape of a wedge – accounting for the missing centimetre.

"It was a little table top, and it had been really raining the day before, and it had kind of been dug out – I had a little too much speed but then not enough and so just went into the ditch and went over the front," Price said.

"I landed flat bang on the back. I did a full flip.

"We went through a couple of different doctors and surgeons and we found one that basically had a plan saying you don't need a brace, you don't need surgery, let's just take X-rays each week.

"I made it into a wedge and if there was any major compression on top of that, it could slip and then that would be major spinal cord damage.

"I was very careful for six weeks. I was in Canberra for two weeks in hospital and then I was at home for six weeks basically doing nothing.

"Once they were happy that the bone had calcified and it was all good, I was able to start pilates and then able to start some basic gym stuff.

"I'm now dead lifting. I can do what I want now. I've just got to be really careful, and really in tune with my body and how it's going."

It wasn't the first time Price had broken her back. Ten years earlier, she fell foul of the injury gods at Perisher while skiing.

On that occasion she broke her T10 vertebra and suffered stress fractures in her L4 and L5 vertebrae.

"I figure you only get lucky twice, and then the third time round you're probably not going to be that lucky," Price said.

"I was ski racing, there were three rollers at the end of the skier cross course. The first girl went down and fell onto her back and I was the second runner down and I did the same thing. Then they demolished the course.

"My body bounced back from it quite well. It did take a little bit of time to figure out what was going to work and what wasn't, and just find the right posture, whereas this time I've basically just gone from the bottom up, started again.

"Let's build a really strong body and not have any major issues. Fingers crossed, I haven't had any hands-on physio treatment, it's basically all just been mechanical, pilates and gym."

Price will be joined by world champion sailors Josh McKnight and Harry Morton on the Kleenmaid SuperFoiler, which will race on Sydney Harbour from March 23-25.

SuperFoilers have been designed to harness maximum aerodynamic efficiency, which allows the craft to travel at almost three times the speed of the wind.

The unique design relies on wing-shaped foils that lift the vessel out of the water to minimise drag.

"Josh and I have gone about 32 knots on the water, it's definitely hold on, that's in about 12 knots of wind so two to three times the wind speed," Price said.

"It's exhilarating. It's really high performance, it's low drag, the foils are uniquely designed for this boat, and the designers have done an amazing job to get it all working together."
