Under-fire coach Jim Tomsula has been "relieved of his head coaching duties" by the San Francisco 49ers.
Jarryd Hayne helps 49ers to last game win
On the bench for most of the game against St Louis Rams, Jarryd Hayne did come on late as a special teams player and made an important intervention.
The club's statement comes just hours after the 49ers 19-16 overtime victory over the St Louis Rams in the season finale.
"Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years," said CEO Jed York. "We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future."
Tomsula had been under pressure following the 49ers' poor run this season, with the club registering five wins and 11 losses to finish bottom of the NFC West conference.
Tomsula is the man credited with giving former NRL star Jarryd Hayne his big break in the American sport, but he also faced criticism throughout the season for not playing Hayne enough and dropping him to the practice squad for almost two months.
