Belgium's rise as a soccer power has been underlined in the latest FIFA rankings in which it climbed to sixth after having been 53rd in August last year.
But England's ranking of 17th is its lowest since 2001.
Reigning European and world champion Spain remains in first place, with Argentina - which this week clinched qualification for next year's World Cup in Brazil - up to second, ahead of Germany. Italy and Colombia complete the top five.
Australia dropped seven places to 53rd, surrendering second place in the Asian list to Iran (48).
