Canberra FC has spent almost $30,000 bringing Sydney's two powerhouse A-League teams to Canberra this pre-season, but said the opportunity was ''too good to refuse" to host a trial against Sydney FC next month.
Canberra FC will play A-League glamour club Sydney FC at Deakin on September 10, barely a month after going down 1-0 to Western Sydney Wanderers at the same venue.
The trial match will occur only days before the Canberra Premier League grand final, but even that didn't deter Canberra FC from locking in the duel with Sydney FC.
"Even if we are lucky enough to progress to the [Canberra] grand final, we'd still want to put our best foot forward against Sydney FC," said Canberra FC secretary Martin Radic.
"It does cost a lot to bring A-League teams to Canberra, but we'd love to develop a relationship with these teams and look at doing something like this every year.
"When you get the opportunity to play a club like Sydney FC, it's an.opportunity too good to refuse."
Sydney FC has already submitted a list of the squad it intends to bring to Canberra and is likely to field a strong team, as it will be only a month from its A-League season opener against Melbourne City on October 11.
Sydney FC's new-look squad includes Australian goalscoring ace Alex Brosque, New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz and Austrian captain Marc Janko.
Deakin Oval can hold a capacity crowd of about 2000, which would enable Canberra FC to recoup its costs.
Sydney FC will play only two more trials after the Canberra match: against Wellington Phoenix in Wollongong on September 19, and Melbourne Victory in Hobart on September 28.
''It’s going to be an excellent showcase of A-League football and it’s good for Canberra and Hobart to see these games live when they would otherwise not get the chance,” said Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold.
"These two games will be our last chance to fine-tune everything ahead of our first A-League fixture. The boys have performed admirably so far and this is a great opportunity to build on our confidence and hopefully deliver another two impressive performances."
