The extraordinary success of Alessandro Del Piero's move to Sydney FC may be the catalyst for another Italian icon, Fabrizio Miccoli, to join the A-League.

Having managed to release Marcos Flores to the Central Coast Mariners last week, Melbourne Victory have a spare foreign marquee position and are in advanced negotiations with the 34-year old.

Fairfax Media believes they could agree terms to bring Miccoli to AAMI Park as soon as this week. However, as the club is still negotiating with other marquee players, including Greek legend Giorgos Karagounis, a final decision may not come so easily.

Considered one of Italy's best strikers of the past 15 years, Miccoli played alongside Del Piero at Juventus from 2002 to 2004 and also spent time Fiorentina, Perugia and Portuguese giants Benfica.

But it is with Palmero, the club he joined in 2007, where Miccoli has achieved his greatest success.

Miccoli scored 81 goals in 179 club matches for the Sicilian club, as well as tallying up 53 assists. He was made captain in 2009, a position he held until now.

Across his club career, in all competitions, he has scored 194 goals and made 111 assists in 548 games. He has scored the sixth-most Serie A goals of players still active in that league.

However, Miccoli's career has come to something of a sour end in Italy.

Despite scoring eight goals and making nine assists in 29 Serie A appearances this campaign, he couldn't help Palermo avoid relegation for the first time since 2004 as they slumped to 18th position.

  • Just what the 'A' League doesn't need!Another 'has been/mercenary'!
Surely, for the 'A' League, and,Australian Football, has gone passed the 'old' days,
of ex stars, from whatever leagues they've played in,coming over to our shores, and,
sticking out their hands, for the 'big' bucks, their always wanting, and, contributing next
    to nothing.Please Victory,don't 'fall' into that trap.Give the youth a fair go,as they're
    our future.

    • If he can manage eight goals and nine assists from 29 Serie A appearances in the 2012/2013 season I'm sure he can handle the A League.

    • Yes, the youth are are future Richoman but surely our up and coming players will only benefit from training and playing alongside these greats of the game. I think the Marque system is working very well and helping to lift the standard of the A-League. Can't wait for the new season to start!!

    • This guy is outrageously good - would be amazing if he came to Aus. Youtube his 40m volley from last year. One of the top strikers in SerieA in the past few years and he's got a few more years in him than Del Piero. He'd put Heskey to shame!

      • As a die-hard Palermo fan I can honestly say this is major coup if this happens. He is amazing to watch and would thrive in the A-League.

        • Given that Karagounis has signed for another year with Fulham, seems likely that Miccoli may be the new marque for MV.

          • @richoman just like Harry kwell.. This guy as plenty to offer at 34 could have 3 or 4 years in the a league.. I don't mind if they come out and perform and don't treat it like a holiday.. The 3 from last year performed very well.. Hope Melbourne sign him

            • I am from Palermo and I am a Palermo supporter from day 1.
I know Miccoli's talent. He just turned 34 and the only reason why Palermo let him go and other clubs in Italy and Europe are not interested is because he is under mafia investigation and for what he said (over a call intercepted by the police) to describe Giovanni Falcone who sacrificed his life on the war against the mafia.
Apart from that he is a pure fuoriclasse and if he can make the difference in a Serie A club imagine what he can do in A-League.
As someone said Miccoli's brain is not in his head but in his feet
