Marc Janko announced as Sydney FC's marquee signing

The comparisons are inevitable but Austrian captain Marc Janko says he's ready to fill the void left by Italian great Alessandro del Piero after being unveiled as Sydney FC’s marquee signing.

"I see myself as a leader and I want to deliver goals, I didn't come here for a vacation," Janko, 31, said on Thursday.

"Of course he's [Del Piero] an international world-class player and has lots of titles, he's an international superstar that's for sure, but you have to know I'm a different kind of player. I'm not a player who creates a game, I'm the one who is in the front and centre to score the goals and for that I have to get fed [the ball]. It's not about one player, it's about being a team in football and one player can make the difference but you have to have the support of your teammates.

Marc Janko was first approached by Sydney FC two months ago.

Marc Janko was first approached by Sydney FC two months ago.

"The first time I heard about Australian football was when Sydney signed Del Piero, I think it gave the whole league a big boost for the image. All over the world people read about that and it was a good thing for Australia and the A-League."

Janko said he was first approached by Sydney FC two months ago when playing with Trabzonspor in the Turkish league. The 1.96-metre striker has also played with Red Bull Salzburg and FC Twente, and has scored 17 goals from 40 matches his national team. He bolsters Graham Arnold's already impressive strike force, which includes Shane Smeltz, Bernie Ibini and Australian marquee Alex Brosque.

Arnold made it his mission when he signed as coach of Sydney FC in May to work extensively on recruiting a contingent of star-studded strikers in an attempt to help the Sky Blues win their first A-League title since 2010.

"It's up to them now to select themselves," Arnold said. "When I first came to the club, I felt an area that needed looking at was the front part of the field. Marc gives us something completely different to the other strikers. It's a very frightening frontline when you put them all together. Marc being a marquee will get no special attention, he will earn his position and he's clear on that.

"Marc has an exceptional goal-scoring record and is a fantastic addition to our attacking options. He will complement our current strikers well and at 6 foot 5 will cause a lot of problems for opposition defenders.”

Chairman Scott Barlow said he was thrilled the club was able to sign a player of Janko's calibre. "Graham has been very clear on the player that he wanted to bring to Sydney FC," Barlow said. "The only guidance I gave was for us to find the best footballer we could find that fit the criteria that Graham had set."

Regarding his international career, Janko said he had no plans to give up playing for Austria, ranked 44th in the world.

As for taking on the Sydney FC captaincy, he said he would consider it, but hand-balled the decision on to Arnold.

"That's the coach's decision, I just want to be part of the team and it's not a big deal for me who is the captain."

    • So not really all that marquee then... Quick lets buy a season pass so we can watch a guy that used to play with Twente and O'porto who will score 1 goal every 2 or 3 games. Can't wait!!!

        • Great choice.

He won't be as outrageously skilled as Alessandro was, but he's a fine European striker, still near his peak, with a great career behind him. He'll be fantastic to watch with Antonis, Ibini and Carle buzzing around him.

          Looking forward to this.

              • Serious, in who's lunchtime is Janko a marquee player??? The tightwads at Sydney FC had a chance to sell the club to the Saudi's, make some money and rack off from the sport we love so that the club can get a real injection of funds and we can get some REAL marquee players. Instead Sydney FC's loss is Melbourne Heart (now Melbourne City) gain.

Seriously SMH this news isn't even worth printing.

Please I would like anyone to state any major achievements of Janko? He's just a dangly too tall failed striker. but hey what do you expect from a boring uninspiring coach like Arnold. He would not want or be able to manage a real marquee superstar.

                • dont be so negative.....a player who is still nearer his peak than alot of other marquees. sure adp brought in the crowds, but what would you prefer, a guy that is past his best but manages to drag along some bandwaggoners that you never see again, or someone who will improve our results, play some decent football and maybe get people seeing some good football for once and hopefully making them life long fans. btw, 77 goals in 121 austrian league matches is nothing to be sneezed at
