Now the Canberra United captain and her twin could be wearing the green and gold of Australia together.

In the perfect scenario, Nicole and Ashleigh Sykes have been selected in the Australian women's senior squad for this month's two-game series with China. Nicole would make her international debut if she plays in either of the games at WIN Stadium on November 24 or Pirtek Stadium on November 27.

Ashleigh is eager to add to her four appearances in 2008 after being recalled to the national squad for the first time in five years.

While she has been around the training squad previously, Nicole has received her first call-up after establishing herself as one of the premier left-backs in the W-League over the past two seasons. The pair will play against the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

Having her sister back in the squad after a five-year absence makes the 21-year-old's selection all the sweeter.

''To play alongside Ash for the Matildas would be insane,'' Nicole said. ''You dream of representing your country and walking out there for the national anthem, and to have Ash next to me would be incredible. Doing little athletics together, we were watching the Olympics always dreaming that one day we might be on the podium and I might be getting gold, Ash might be getting silver.''

The Sykes sisters have been a part of the United squad since the W-League's inaugural season in 2008-09, and will line up in Sunday's match with the Western Sydney Wanderers at McKellar Park.

Nicole brought up her 50th cap in last week's 3-0 win against Brisbane Roar, while Ashleigh is just behind with 47 appearances. Ashleigh was delighted her sister had been rewarded with Matildas selection after taking over the captaincy this year and last season winning the club's player's player award.

Even though Nicole has the captain's armband, it's still business as usual on the pitch.

''Nothing's really changed, she's always bossed me around,'' Ashleigh laughed. ''It's nice to be in the national squad together. All the family is really happy, and she deserves it.''

Ashleigh has bounced back from a disappointing 2012-13 season when she tore her quadriceps in round four, restricting the attacking forward to six games.

The Sykes sisters are joined in the Matildas squad by United teammates Lydia Williams and Michelle Heyman.
