Incredible scenes in Brisbane as the Roar become the first team to defend their A-League crown. But they did it in the most controversial and dramatic of circumstances, with a penalty awarded to Besart Berisha in the 94th minute to win the match.

He delivered from the spot but the initial replays showed that was a poor call from referee Jarred Gillett. A completely shattered Glory captain Jacob Burns had this to say to Fox Sports:

"I don't have words really. You've got to congratulate Brisbane but I feel as though I've been robbed there. That decision cost us the grand final.

"Plain as day. You could tell from Berisha's reaction. He came up to us right away. He knows it wasn't a penalty. These knee-jerk decisions cost you.

    "I'm just gutted."

    And Besart Berisha:

"I don't know what to say. It goes so fast, I don't know what was going on. There was a touch but in the end, I think it was correct from Jarred. This is football. Sometimes it's like this."

Perth hit the lead when Franjic's own goal in the 53rd minute had the champions behind. Berisha hit back with a header in the 84th minute and then in the final minute of extra time, weaved his way into the box. He beat a number of players but essentially had an air-swing and fell over. Gillett pointed to the spot right away and the rest is history.

How do you judge that one? Hard to say. The Roar had the better chances but Perth's strategy worked well for much of the game, frustrating Brisbane's passing. Whoever deserved to win, you never want to see it happen in those sort of circumstances.

Key moment That's easy to see. When Besart Berisha made a run into the box in the dying seconds, little did he know the controversy he was about to create, nor the history he would make. With what will go down as the most controversial call in A-League history, Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot and it was game over.

Numbers game Plenty of Glory fans - including the captain - will say they were robbed and given it was one-all and about to go into extra time, they have a case. But the fact is they didn't have a single shot on goal, while the Roar had seven. Perth's goal came from the boot of Ivan Franjic, the Roar right back.

Man of the moment Berisha's double in clutch time would normally earn it and while Thomas Broich was the official best player, it's hard to go past Burns. The Glory veteran was a rock in defence and directed play all night. He, in particular, should feel as he something was taken away.

What it all means Perth came to play today and didn't look overawed by the big occasion. The ending will be endlessly debated and there's little doubt it was the wrong call to award a penalty. But this Roar side simply does not know how to lose the big games. They kept coming and coming even though they weren't at their best, found a way - through perserverance and fortune - to win. Ange Postecoglou is almost certainly on his way to Victory but leaves a champion side that has made history back in Queensland.

Love to know what you think. Add your comments below.

FULLTIME It's all over. Roar go back-to-back in the most controversial of circumstances. They win 2-1 but in some ways, this is just starting. Berisha went down in the box to earn a 94th minute penalty. But he just fell over - no defenders in sight.

94th min Roar 2 Glory 1. Berisha scores and the Glory are shattered. One of the worst decisions you will see.

94th min Amazing run from Berisha into the box and he just fell over! Awful call! Terrible! He's had an air swing and fell over... here he goes...

94th min Steffanuto tries to find Broich but no luck as it rolls over the sideline. PENALTY to the Roar! To the spot!

92nd min Now a yellow for Vukovic for time wasting. They are unravelling here Perth and will play extra time with 10 men and no Smeltz. Assuming it goes that far. Roar 1 Glory 1.

91st min Saved! Meyer unleashed with power and Vukovic made a wonderul diving grab to bump it wide. RED CARD for Heffernan! Second yellow with a bad tackle on Franjic! All happening!

89th min Free kick from the Roar turns into a corner for the Roar as the Glory clear. Four minutes of added time just shown up on the clock. Roar 1 Glory 1.

88th min Burns over the set piece but Theoklitos has no problems whatsoever. Burns is just willing his side over the line here but he needs to get back and defend this charge from the Roar. It's 1-1 with just minutes left.

86th min And Smeltz has been subbed for the Glory. Franjic booked now for a nasty tackle on... can't just see there... still on the deck. Free kick in a semi-dangerous place now for Perth, about 35m out from the Roar goal.

85th min Wow. Absolutely nothing happening there for Brisbane. Broich simply dwelled over it on the sideline, launched a hopeful cross and the Glory defence that has been so good all night just went missing. Berisha found himself one on one with Pantelidis and he beat him in the air. Headed it in as Vukovic stood hapless. Conjured from thin air. These guys never know when to quit. It's Roar 1 Glory 1.

84th min GOAL! Berisha. Roar 1 Glory 1.

80th min Smeltz takes a seat. Not a lot of chances for him tonight but very tough to play on with a busted face. Steven McGarry on the park now. The Glory flooding back to defend this precious lead. Glory 1 Roar 0.

78th min Broich hammered again. They've made him pay at times tonight. Free kick from the wing but no card for Van Den Brink. Vukovic sees that one off and the Glory retain their 1-0 lead. Not sure how the Roar are going to find a way out of this one.

76th min Dodd replaced by Scott Neville for the Glory. Dodd has been very good tonight.

75th min Both grand final heroes off for the Roar. Henrique replaced by James Meyer. Who will be the hero this time? Berisha has been curtailed all night. Hardly had a meaningful touch and when he did find himself in a prime spot in the first half, he misfired badly.

73rd min Mehmet! Cross was just a touch high and fast but if he had have got a touch on that it would have bounced home. Very close and they could have iced this one right there and then. Broich away but his shot clatters into a cluster of purple and white shirts. Too much hustle from the visitor at the moment. They can sense a result. Glory 1 Roar 0.

70th min Bratten and Fitzgerald giving some life to the Roar but Perth more than up to that last raid. Lots of passing but no chance of any penetration. Burns composed and a complete authority in defence. Big upset on the cards here perhaps.

66th min Bruce Djite on twitter having a crack at the "fake fans" who have paid very good money to get out here today. Some folks are just never happy. What a load of rubbish. Hard to fault the occasion from my seat. The Roar aren't so happy though. They have about 20 minutes to find some fluency and a way through this stout Glory defensive pattern. Glory lead 1-0.

65th min No miracle today for Paartalu, who scored the famous goal to send ot to penalties last year. He's off and so is Murdocca. New blood for the Roar. Let's see what Ferguson does with his bench.

63rd min Two changes looming for the Roar with Fitzgerald and Bratten about to enter the fray. And close for Henrique! Inflitrated to get a boot to that cross from Berisha but Heffernan was too good and cleared. Roar appeal for a penalty but not required. Corner now for the Roar. Glory 1 Roar 0.

60th min Lots of time left for the Roar and I think the Glory would be foolish to change their game plans a great deal. Been effective to this point, even is Vukovic has been called on to make some good saves. But the Roar aren't looking like their crisp selves at the moment. Feeling the pressure? Glory 1 Roar 0 - Franjic with the own goal.

56th min Now Heffernan booked for a late tackle on Broich. Good to be hard and all but that was a bit pointless. Ball was long gone. Roar need some fluency now and the Glory can spoil. I ddare say 1-0 will do them as Henrique couldn't get behind his shot as it flies high and wide. Glory 1 Roar 0.

55th min Back-to-back corners for the Roar. Crowd is 50,334 and they are right on the edge of their seat. The Roar turn it up a notch now but this Glory defence has been resolute. Huge finish on the way. Glory 1 Roar 0.

50th min Franjic is distraught. Mehmet's run was strong and the cross from Dodd was good but it banged into the foot of Franjic and Perth are the shock leaders here in the grand final. Amazing scenes here, especially as Broich had almost scored up the other end just seconds before. Well played Perth - they deserve this lead. Can they hold on against a side that never, ever thinks they are out of contention. It's Perth 1 Brisbane 0.

49th min Nichols couldn't resist that juicy volley but never a threat. Sails harmlessly over but SAVE from Vukovic! Broich was loose and dangerous and slammed it at the goal but the Glory stopper does the job. Instrumental stuff. Great chance for the Roar but now an own goal to the Roar! GOAL and Glory lead 1-0.

47th min I'm just wondering about the body language of the Roar at the moment. Some near misses in the second half and there's a chance for Perth! It evades Smeltz and Mehmet though and the Roar survive. Couldn't clear it from in front of goal and almost paid the price. And here's a yellow card for Burns for a rough tackle on Broich. Fair enough. Still 0-0.

46th min Smeltz has a slightly more fetching looking bandage and the Glory finally emerge as we get things started in the second half. Postecoglou bullish in the rooms for Brisbane but the pressure really on now. Neither side really taking this by the throat - it's genuinely up for grabs at 0-0 as we begin the second half.

HALFTIME Brisbane 0 Glory 0. Love to hear your thoughts - log in and let us know how you saw that half.

47th min Loose stuff from the Roar. What was Adnan thinking with that long ball to Hemrique, who is 150cm tall at a stretch. The Roar not helping themselves there and he had no chance against Heffernan. Got to give plenty of credit to the Roar and Burns in particular. Been superb and he foils another raid there.

44th min Here's the Glory trying to sneak a lead before halftime. They are on the attack and would be absolutely chuffed to grab one against the run of play. That throw bound for Heffernan but wasted. A whopping four minutes of injury time now thanks to the Smeltz bloodbath. It's 0-0.

40th min Franjic got plenty on that and it forced a quality diving save from Vukovic. Broich's corner too long but the Roar still pressuring. They need to make this count I think - they've been stung before by failing to capitalise.

38th min Oh no! Berisha has an airswing! In fact, he didn't even pull the trigger. Amazing stuff. Great ball from Henrique and the Albanian striker just had the keeper to beat! But he hesitated and it just rolled past. Crazy stuff from a kinda crazy guy. Perth can't believe their luck. Berisha turns around and kicks the turf in disgust. Now a SAVE from Vukovic off Franjic! The Glory hold on but not by much. Still 0-0.

37th min Nichols! First times it off the cross from Broich and good save from Vukovic. Read that very well indeed and some cracks just appearing in the Glory defence on that occasion. Meanwhile, Chris has pointed out the dairy theme to the assistant referees - Cream and Cheeseman. Delicious.

36th min Telling boot from Burns! The Glory skipper gets the spikes to the ball just as Berisha was about to unload. They mingle a little as they stand but all fun. We've gone end to end now - Murdocca forces a save from Vukovic just after Howarth floated a header safely towards Theoklitos. It's 0-0.

33rd min Adnan tries to find Henrique as the little Brazilian makes one his first little darts into the box from his right wing. Too long from the big defender but promising play for the Roar. Perth finally having some decent ball but aren't getting the opportunity to do a great deal with things at this stage. We're at 0-0 in the grand final.

30th min Lovely turn from Broich and Josh Risdon penalised as he goes in late from behind. Broich just starting to have a few more influential touches but no reward yet for the Roar. The Glory still pressuring the Roar fullbacks and it's worked pretty well so far.

26th min Smeltz doesn't have a bloody nose, it's a cut below the nose. Will get stitched at halftime apparently. Dodd makes a nice run now but Adnan coasts across to dink it away. Nice opportunity for Perth but the chip in behind is too long and Theoklitos will restart from the Roar goal.

24th min Scrappy from the Roar as they give the ball away in dangerous territory but Smith comes to the rescue just as the Glory started hustling up the park. Pushing up hard and high on the Roar and Brisbane will have the chance to counter if they are good enough. The Roar have conceded from silly turnovers of late and there's no doubt the Glory would have noticed, particularly on Tuesday against Ulsan Hyundai. Still 0-0.

20th min Smeltz showing no sign of any lasting impact but here's Broich in the box! Spoiled in his run but a great ball for Steffanuto! He's offside. That's better from the Roar and Nichols starting to get involved as well. No goals here yet.

18th min We're back and Smeltz has emerged from that medical huddle with a fairly horrendous looking bandage around his head. Won't win any fashion contests but he's hoping it gets the job done. Play back underway - still 0-0.

17th min Concern for Smeltz but this is a bit silly. If they need to stop the bleeding, take him off the field. Play still stopped here. Looks bad but I'm sure he can walk. Treat him off the park.

15th min Smeltz on the turf and a free kick on the way as he ran into Matt Smith. Blood tumbling from the nose of the Glory striker. Nothing malicious - they collided and Smith threw up the arm to protect himself. Blood just flowing onto the grass and some real concern now. Awul luck for the Glory and he must find a way to play on here. They can't stop the bleeding just at the moment.

13th min Adnan scrappy again. Sent a pass down the park that went into the stands. Brisbane really starting to control possession though without getting a great deal of opportunity. Patient defence from the Glory and the Roar are being contained as they win another attacking throw. It's 0-0.

9th min More enterprising play now by the Roar but the Glory hold tight for now. And here's a booking on Miller as he chopped down Paartalu. Broich over a free kick but it's too far out to be a direct threat you would think. Floated in another free kick to Brisbane, this time from the corner. Adnan on his own but his header was well over the top. Free header - should have forced a save at least. That was miles off. It's 0-0.

6th min Now the Roar get a corner. Poor clearance by Pantelidis but no damage done. Should have done much better there the Glory defender. That's Brisbane's first look at the Glory square. It's 0-0.

4th min Mehmet doing some nice work on the right for Perth and he wins the corner for his side. First set piece of the day but Brisbane head it away through Broich. But the Glory get it back and Mehmet first away! Hits Adnan but a very promising start indeed from the Glory. Oozing positivity and the Roar have barely had a touch. Still 0-0.

2nd min Already there is some suffocating defence from both sides. No room to move out there at all but some encouraging touches already for Perth. Stringing passes together and they will pile huge pressure on Brisbane to try and stifle their passing game.

1st min Jarred Gillett is referee today. And the Roar get us started as Broich and Berisha roll things into life. And the grand final is away...

4.06pm News also that a chopper with a Freedom of Speech banner has been seen at the Gold Coast. Assuming it is headed this way. Classy stuff. And here's Ange honoured by The Den...

4pm Roar fans have just unfurled an ENORMOUS picture of Postecoglou behind the goal. Maybe they can lend it to the Victory next year? Just get it re-coloured? Great stuff though - he's a big favourite up here and here come the teams. Steffanuto and Burns lead out their men.

3.56pm Ange Postecoglou gets a big, manly hug from Besart Berisha and we've not far from a start here. The trophy has been flushed out onto the field and that's what we're playing for today. Pre-match entertainment done, just the anthem to go and we're away. Huge mail all week that this is Postecoglou's final A-League game in charge of a club he has turned into a powerhouse. That could be a powerful motivation for the Roar or an unwanted distration.

3.50pm Roar have filed back into the rooms but the Glory just soaking it up for a little longer. Huge occasion for them. They need to start brightly today I think against a side that hasn't carried in the same form as last season but is still absolutely convinced they are going to be the first A-League side to go back-to-back. The Glory are a great story - nobody gave them much of a hope but here they are. Let's see how the nerves hold in what is going to be a very loud and one-sided crowd.

3.43pm Just been told this one is SOLD OUT in Brisbane. Of course, there's no accounting for members etc but for the general public, there's not a single ticket left. Brilliant result for the Roar and Glory and already, the atmosphere out here is just buzzing.

3.35pm Both sets of players out on the field warming up as I type. Some thought earlier in the week, after the Asian Champions League game here on Tuesday, that this pitch was in shoddy shape but looks pretty good to me. Not a drop of rain in Brisbane this week and there's no excuse for some fast and open football. Brisbane obviously have been here before. Who could forget their implausible comeback against the Mariners at this ground last season. Some new faces since then including striker Besart Berisha, who has scored 19 times this season. On the other end is Shane Smeltz, who has scored 17 and is a constant threat. The Roar have the pedigree but the Glory are on a roll. Cannot wait for this one to get rolling.

I'll take you through the game and give you my rapid reactions soon after. I'll have more for readers at brisbanetimes.com.au tomorrow and Michael Lynch from The Age and Seb Hassett from the SMH are pitchside to give you their expert thoughts.

3.30pm Good afternoon sports fans and thanks for your company on a wonderful occasion for Australian football, the A-League grand final. We're expecting an almost sold-out Suncorp Stadium - more than 50,000 fans here today - and Brisbane has turned on a spectacular afternoon for the decider. The stadium is painted orange aside from a few very committed Glory fans, who have turned a little patch in the corner purple. Brisbane are favourites to defend their title but the Glory have a genuine matchwinner in Shane Smeltz and I see this one being wide open. Bring it on.

Love for you guys to leave your comments and predictions below. Let's hear your thoughts.

To get you started, here's Craig Foster's thoughts on the game this afternoon and my piece on Mohamed Adnan, Brisbane's Bahrain defender who has had an incredible journey to the match today.

    • The officials are Cheeseman and Cream? Sounds like some dairy-themed crime-fighting duo.

      • Perhaps Glory should form a huddle as a tactical play. Berisha does seem to despise the huddle. Might get him carded :)

              • The theatrics and the decision at the end will provide more fuel than anything else for the haters to point to as to why our game is second rate.

Thank you so much Berisha for ruining was up until that moment a great example of teh game. Don't blame the ref too much - blame the authorities who let it go on and the pathetic examples of soccer players who perpetrate it. Berisha should be suspended at the very least or even better kicked out of the game and made an example of.

                • Perth did not have a shot on goal the whole 90+ minutes, don't complain about not winning.

                  • What a disgrace - make video referees inside the penalty box compulsory. The ref should have given a yellow card for incompetent diving against Brisbane. A shocking call and a horrid way to end the season. Does Lowy have the guts to introduce video referees?

                      • Well done Roar, thank you for proving Queensland can get anywhere if they cheat hard enough. In sport as in everything else in life. Berisha, your diving antics would be better served trying for an Oscar. Except your acting is pathetic.Thai drag queens could act better. Diver, Choker, Coward.
