Roar break losing streak

The Brisbane Roar have broken their losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Sydney FC, but not before Italian import Alessandro Del Piero showed his class with a pair of goals.

Thomas Broich, Erik Paartalu, Ben Halloran and Besart Berisha did the job for the home side, while Del Piero was the only Sydney player to find the back of the net.

Read on to see how it unfolded:

Fulltime: If stoppage time was going to offer anything more in this game it would only have been another Roar goal. It's not to be though and the home side have run out 4-2 winners.

91st: The timekeepers have given Sydney a chance at a miracle, with four minutes of extra time being added to the clock. Would be quite a comback to salvage a point from here though.

87th: That won't likely be one of Del Piero's fondest moments of his time in the A-League. A goon has made his way onto the pitch and put his arm around the Sydney striker. Security deals with him pretty quickly but not before he makes a goon of himself.

86th: Broich unloads from long-range after some good lead-up work from Brattan and Murdocca. Necevski covers well though.

82nd: Berisha gets a warm ovation and an early shower. His two goals have underlined how much he was missed when sidelined with a stomach complaint. Luke Brattan takes ihs place.

79th: Finally Theo gets his hands on a Del Piero offering. Fair enough the Italian's effort from left of goal was probably more pass than shot, but with the night he's had, the Roar keeper won't argue the details.

77th: Great chance for Sydney. Yau draws theo off his line and chips the keeper, but Roar's Franjic gets back in time to make a diving clearance off the line.

76th: Roar pushing hard for a fifth goal now, with Henrique looking particularly hungry. He runs onto a pass from Broich but his shot from the left of goal is easily delt with by Sydney.

74th: Broich fires in a free kick that finds the head of Berisha in the box. He can't make it count though and Sydney clear. Ball ends up with Murdocca though and the Roar midfielder tries his luck but can only manage to send the ball high over the crossbar.

70th: Henrique takes a long-range shot, but his neat work to find some free space is undone by a sloppy shot that didn't trouble Necevski.

66th: A chance goes begging for the Roar after a Halloran cross streams in a foot behind the charging Berisha. Roar back on the attack now after being camped in their own end for an extended period.

64th: Yau looks to bring teh gap back to a solitary goal, but his long-range offering catches a defletion and wanders harmlessly wide of the goal. Sydney can't make anything of the corner.

57th: Goal Roar! Berisha takes the home side back out to a two-goal lead with a great finish of his own. He drifts left, beats three Sydney defenders and ignores pleas from the crowd to "Shoot!" before finally letting fly from the top of the box. Roar lead 4-2.

55th: Del Piero now recieves his first A-League yellow card for a challenge on Paartalu. Crowd eating up this contest now.

52nd: Crowd announced at 22,970, many of whom are here to see a certain Italian striker. You have to think they have got what they came for so far. Del Piero's finishes on both goals were soaked in class and while Theo will be having nightmares about him, nobody will judge the Roar keeper harshly for being comprehensively beaten from both long and short range.

49th: Goal Sydney! Again it's Del Piero showing he's a cut above. this time he turns at the top of the box, works a one-two with Yau then outclasses an overmatched Theo in the one-on-one contest. Roar lead 3-2.

Halftime: After a hectic few minutes, the home side go into the break with the two-goal halftime lead they looked certain to have surrendered moments earlier when Del Piero showed his pedigree with his long-range strike. Roar had a late chance to stretch the lead with a free kick after Reid earned a yellow card for a challenge on Halloran, but it amounted to nothing and the players have retired to the sheds for a well-earned Gatorade (or whatever brand of energy drink they serve in the A-League). Roar lead 3-1.

45th: Goal Roar! With halftime just moments away the Roar stretch the lead through Halloran. He fires a shot across the face of Necevski that finds the right corner of the net. Sydney livid at a perceived handball by Paartalu in the lead-up but the referee isn't having a bar of it.

42nd: Goal Sydney! It's game on after Del Piero launches a rocket from outside the area. Emerton fed a pass left to his striker and everyone in the stadium knew the Italian was going to pull the trigger. Pull the trigger he did and there wasn't a thing Theo could do about it. Roar lead 2-1.

40th: Echoes of the home opener against Melbourne when the Roar blew the game open with two goals in two minutes in the first half. On that night it was also Broich and Paartalu in the thick of it. The duo scored back-to-back goals that set up Brisbane's 5-0 win against the Victrory that night.

33rd: Goal Roar! They love scoring goals in pair, this lot. Broich's cross finds Paartalu's head and his effort forces a great save from Necevski. However the crumbs fall back at the Roar mdfielder's feet and he makes no mistake the second time around. Roar lead 2-0.

30th: Goal Roar! Broich takes a free from 35m out. It's well struck but there's no excuse for three attackers and a handful of defenders not getting a touch on it. It finds its way straight through everyone and beats Necevski for the opening goal of the match. Ryall wound up with a yellow card for a challenge on Henrique that led to the free kick.

28th: Abbas getting attention from the Sydney training staff now for what looks to be a calf problem. Looks like he's going to be OK.

27th: Del Piero not having a great deal to do for his money so far tonight, with Sydney on their heals for much of the game so far. He comes back deep for a rare touch but has plenty of attention from the Roar.

24th: Hingert and Halloran link up on the right edge and Hingert feeds a neat ball to Berisha at the near post but the Roar striker spoons it over the bar from short range.

21st: Sydney try to play it out from the back but it almost goes bad. A panicked pass back to Necevski and a booming clearance relieve the pressure.

19th: Sydney defender Fabio given a yellow card after a challenge on Halloran, who, curiously, didn't go to ground.

16th: Del Piero stands over a free kick at a tempting range after Reid was brought down by Roar skipper Smith. The Italian goes over the wall but Theo swallows it at the back.

13th: Goal Roar! Wait, it's offside. A delicate Broich pass finds Berisha at the top of the area and the striker deftly chips the keeper but replays reveal he was a step offside. Silky stuff from the home side though.

13th:  Broich standing over a corner kick now after Halloran shows good pace down the right flank only to have the raid defused. Sydney clear the corner.

10th: The player formerly known as Sydney's star signing, Emerton, launches a hopeful shot from well outside the penalty area, but the only ones troubled by it are a few members of the Roar faithful to the right of the goal.

7th:  Roar have their passing game working early and have spent plenty of time in Sydney's half of teh field. Berisha looks to latch onto a searching Stefanutto cross but Sydney keeper Necevski gets there first.

1st: And we're underway here at Suncorp Stadium. Earlier rumours of a storm have proved to be just that and it looks like a great night for football.

Pre-game: All eyes tonight will be on Sydney's star import, Italian striker Alessandro Del Piero. He adds a considerable dash of class to a match between two sides far from their best at the moment. The home side has lost three on the trot, and the visitors two - it's not the form you expect from franchises that hold a combined four A-League crowns. Striker Besart Berisha is set to return from injury in a boost for the Roar, and goalkeeper Michael Theo has overcome an injury scare.

    • Well the headline about hosting Del Piero is right as he has contributed moe on one good leg than the rest of his sky blue teammates. Maybe should look at them rather than the manager.
