Coach Ange Postecoglou revealed on Thursday Rogic's hopes of playing in the Asian Cup are over after the 21-year-old star midfielder had more surgery and faces a "lengthy absence" from the field.

Rogic was left out of the Socceroos' squad to play friendlies against the UAE and Qatar next month and his injury curse was contrasted by fellow Canberran Nikolai Topor-Stanley's call up and Carl Valeri's omission.

It's another blow to an injury-cursed 12 months for the Canberra junior.

Rogic was ruled out of the World Cup in Brazil 10 days before the tournament because the pain in his groin was too much to handle.

"Tommy had a little bit of a setback and I understand he's had to have another operation," Postecoglou said.

"That will mean another lengthy absence that rules him out of Asian Cup calculations, from what I understand. He's still got a fair bit of work to do in rehab.

"I haven't spoken to him ... I'm disappointed for him, he obviously wants to get back playing. Injuries are part of a footballer's journey. We tried to get him up for the World Cup ... I think the best thing for him is concentrating on his rehab and making sure he's fit."

Rogic played through pain for almost 12 months to keep his World Cup hopes alive.

But the injury took its toll and he was cut from the Socceroos squad in June and missed the chance to play at one of the world's biggest sporting events.

Rogic returned to Celtic to have surgery to release his adductor, which had initial recovery time of between six and eight weeks.

Postecoglou said he would wait until Rogic returned to full fitness before he was back on the Socceroos' radar.

"He's got a club coach and a club environment and we'll certainly provide him with all the support we can but from my perspective, we've got a lot of footballers who are injured at the moment and we don't know who will miss the Asian Cup," he said.

"It's not about me trying to console players who are missing out. They've got club coaches, their focus should be on their coach and, beyond that, when they're playing regularly, they'll come onto my radar."

Rogic was initially hoping to be back in time for the Asian Cup, which will be played in Australia from January.

Rogic first injured his groin while playing for Celtic in the Scottish Premier League. He attempted to manage the injury, which was debilitating one day and fine the next.

"From my perspective, I don't want to be in the position where we're just relying on one or two players and that's the process we're going through now. Injuries are just part of a footballer's journey," he said. "We've got to protect ourselves so that when players get injured, we've got other options.
