After an opening-round victory against Canberra City, United will face another big test when it travels to Deakin Stadium on Sunday to take on reigning league champions Canberra FC.

United claimed the unwanted wooden spoon in the Canberra NPL last season, but won the Federation Cup to qualify for the inaugural FFA Cup this year.

While United is hoping to draw an A-League side at home for the knockout competition, Forshaw said the squad's main aim was to improve its consistency on a week-to-week basis.

"It won't be a focus until nearer to the time," Forshaw said. "We've got the National Premier League to play and that's our focus at the moment.

"From the club's point of view, it's a big occasion, but we won't know how big it is until we get closer to the time and we see the draw.

"We would like to get a home game and if we could get an A-League team we'd be delighted, but it's really not our focus at the moment; we're just looking at Canberra FC tomorrow."

United scored in the final 10 minutes to pull off a 1-0 win against City, while Canberra FC looks in ominous form after thrashing Monaro Panthers 7-3.

Forshaw is in his first season in charge after previously coaching Belconnen United, and is enjoying the challenge.

"If we can make the top four that'd be great, but if we don't make (the finals) this year we'll certainly make them the next," Forshaw said.

"The aim is to be more competitive than we have in the past. We know we're in good form, but we're not underestimating the size of the challenge against Canberra FC."

Sunday: Canberra National Premier League: Canberra FC v Tuggeranong United at Deakin Stadium; Canberra City v Woden Valley at Gungahlin Enclosed; Belconnen United v FFA Centre of Excellence at McKellar Park; Canberra Olympic v Monaro Panthers at O'Connor Enclosed. All games at 3pm.
