Williams returns for knee surgery

Lydia Williams will have surgery in Adelaide today to repair an anterior cruciate ligament, but will not have the wrist operation which was set to sideline the Canberra United and Matildas goalkeeper for the W-League season.

Williams is impatient to start on the long road to recovery from the knee reconstruction, and she was disappointed when doctors delayed the operation.

''It was a bit hard flying home [from Sweden] and being told I had to wait another week,'' Williams said.

''Once I actually get it fixed and everything looked at, I can start my rehabilitation right away and for me that's what I've been waiting for.''

However, Williams has had some good news with her doctors now saying that her wrist injury won't need surgery.

''It doesn't actually hurt anymore so I don't know if there's any reason to do it at the moment,'' Williams said.

''I got told if it didn't hurt there's no reason [for surgery].''

Williams will return to Canberra this weekend to recover from the operation.

She will then wait until she gets the all clear to fly back to Sweden, where she is still contracted to the club Pitea IF. Fleta Page
