Some of Canberra's brightest tennis prospects will get the chance to taste the atmosphere at the Australian Open in Melbourne next month after Canberra Velocity's women's team was invited to compete in the final of the Asia-Pacific Tennis League.
Velocity finished runner-up in the NSW/ACT conference final after a narrow 4-2 loss to Asia-Pacific Tennis Institute Steelers, but Tennis Australia has called on it to play as first alternate. The play-offs will be at Melbourne Park in the second week of the Open.
Tennis ACT chief executive Ross Triffitt said he expected the Canberra team to be competitive.
"It's a great opportunity for our women's team,'' he said.
"They were unlucky to lose the conference final and will be highly competitive in the national final.''
Canberra's team comprises Alison Bai, Ashley Keir, Tyra Calderwood, Nicole Hoynaski, Tarlina Tipungwuti and Imogen Clews.
