When it comes to allocating sought-after national events it's never that simple.

There's a call for expressions of interest, a drawn-out bidding process and internal politics between the various stakeholders.

Yet Canberra would be the perfect venue for the first round tie on the weekend of March 4-6 for a number of reasons.

Let's start with the facility.

The developed $10.5 million Canberra Tennis Centre was officially opened with much fanfare in July this year.

With 28 full-sized courts across Plexipave, clay and synthetic grass surfaces, it finally gives the national capital the ability to be a major player on the tennis calendar.

The show court has a capacity of 4000 people - close to the International Tennis Federation's requirements of 4500 for first round Davis Cup ties.

While the show court is Plexipave, there have already been discussions about putting in a drop-in grass court if that is what Australia wants to play on.

But considering the US will be relying heavily on the big serving John Isner - America's highest ranked player at 13th in the world - there is every chance Australia wants a slightly slower surface.

The US will also likely call on either Sam Querry (ranked No.41) or Steve Johnson (ranked No.47).

Here's reason No.2 - Nick Kyrgios.

Yes, yes, yes. I know.

I know he's a polarising character. I know his crude sledge to Stan Wawrinka was probably the final nail for many people.

But from what I saw at last weekend's Weston Creek junior tennis day, and how warmly received Kyrgios was received by the Canberra tennis public, he's still a home-town favourite.

Kyrgios is a showman with untapped potential that, harnessed in the right way, can help to put the sport back on the map for all the right reasons.

Providing he has a strong start to the summer at the Australian Open, Kyrgios will be a certain starter for an Australian team also featuring Bernard Tomic (currently ranked 20th) and Thanasi Kokkinakis (ranked 70th).

The tie would be a sellout for all three days.

Now, there's every chance it could draw bigger crowds in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney which have venues with larger capacities.

But each of those three cities mentioned already has a major tennis tournament.

Canberra doesn't.

We've been left in the wilderness, flicked out the back door since the Canberra International was scrapped from the WTA calendar in 2006.

While players the calibre of Justine Henin and Ana Ivanovic lifted the title, the tournament never really gained a massive following.

A marquee one-off event suits Canberra better.

It's what we're good at. It's what we enjoy.

Take a look at the strong interest in the Socceroos' upcoming World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan on November 12.

More than 12,000 tickets were snapped up in the first three days of the game going on sale to the "Football Family".

I'll admit, I doubted what the reception would be, given the opposition and the cheapest tickets to the game were $45 for the "Football Family", or $50 for the general public.

But what it shows is that if there is a decent sporting event in Canberra, we'll go to it.

The Australian cricket team has played in front of a packed house at Manuka Oval for the past two one-day internationals played in Canberra.

It's a stark contrast to the rest of the country where the 50-over format is a hard sell, with fans preferring the hit and giggle of the Big Bash League.

The BBL final was also a sellout in Canberra in January this year, although that would have been the case wherever it was played.

How about the rugby league Test match between Australia and New Zealand at Canberra Stadium in 2013?

Again, a full house.

The Asian Cup this year was the same. Two of the seven games were sellouts for a combined attendance of 82,000 for the seven games.

Sporting organisations also know they will get fantastic media coverage if they bring national events to Canberra.

Whereas the Davis Cup draw barely rated a mention in the Sydney papers on Friday, The Canberra Times started our campaign to bring the tennis' most iconic tournament to Canberra for the first time.

Yes, that's right. The Davis Cup has never been played in Canberra.

Darwin, Townsville and even Mildura in country Victoria - the sight of the famous upset by Zimbabwe in 1998 - have held Davis Cup ties.

This is an anomaly that simply must come to an end, and next year's tie against the US is the perfect time to make it happen.
