Qualifier Kyrgios faces the daunting task of trying to topple world No.4 David Ferrer in the opening round clash in New York.

But regardless of his performance, Australia's Davis Cup coach Josh Eagle has already committed to giving Kyrgios a chance to play for his country in Poland next month.

Eagle told The Canberra Times Kyrgios would be part of a five-man team that would travel to Munich in the coming weeks for training before taking on Poland.

''It's a great honour to be a part of that team,'' Kyrgios said.

''We're all going to Munich to train and push each other before playing Poland. First there are things we have to concentrate on [at the US Open].

''But I've always wanted to play Davis Cup … I can learn a lot from the guys that are in that team, so the opportunity is really exciting.''

Kyrgios was an orange boy for Australia's successful tie against China last year.

But after rising more than 600 places in the world rankings and being on the verge of breaking into the top 200 this week, Kyrgios will join Australia's best players in the Davis Cup.

Australia must beat Poland to rejoin the World Group.

Kyrgios will battle with champion veteran Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and Bernard Tomic for a spot in the singles while Chris Guccione will play doubles.

''Lleyton's one of the greatest competitors to ever play, so I can learn from him, and I'm really good friends with Bernie and Marinko,'' Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios, 18, is the youngest player in the 128-strong US Open men's field. It is his second grand slam appearance after he received a late wildcard to play at the French Open and upset former world No.8 Radek Stepanek in the first round.

Ferrer is the No.4 seed and has won almost $20 million in career prizemoney after more than a decade on the circuit.

Kyrgios is in his first senior campaign and has just $70,000 in prizemoney.

Kyrgios said his game had improved after he took a month to train instead of playing in tournaments.

But the world's best junior player admitted he did not think his first attempt to break into the senior tournament would finish with two grand slams.

''I feel like I'm playing the best tennis I ever have,'' he said. ''I knew at the start of the year that I could aim for top 300 in the world, but I didn't think I'd be playing in main-draw grand slams.

''My good start to the year has carried on and I think I'm starting to play some really good tennis. It's been a pretty big ride and the year's not over yet.''
