Magnussen's times not a concern for NSW champs

February 9, 2012

James Magnussen continues to make waves around the world but the 100m freestyle world champion's coach isn't fussed with how fast he swims at the NSW championships.

Magnussen will wrap up his competitive preparations for March's Olympic trials at the three-day meeting in Sydney, starting with his pet event today.

The 20-year-old reaffirmed his billing as hot London Olympic favourite by clocking 48.05seconds in the glamour event at last month's South Australian championships.

The swim was fast enough to win gold at any Olympics, bar Beijing 2008.

Magnussen's coach Brant Best said it would be hard for Magnussen to reproduce the time at Sydney Olympic Park with more heavy training under his belt but is more concerned with fine tuning his racing technique rather than times.

''If he goes quicker [than SA championships] it'll be a pretty good job,'' Best said.

''Our Adelaide race was pretty much after one week of solid work at the beginning of the cycle.

''The further swimmers get into the cycle, the further they're buried.

''The ideal result for me is him putting together his race properly.''
