The flamboyant, and at times controversial, 20-year-old continues to make waves on and off the court as he set about establishing himself on the professional tennis circuit.
It started with a bang at the Australian Open, forcing his way into the quarter finals in superb style.
But his year was punctuated by that sledging incident with Stan Wawrinka and Dawn Fraser's attack on him.
The former Daramalan College student's profile soared to new heights, beating retired Australian cricket skipper Michael Clarke as the most mentioned athlete across press, radio, television and internet media.
Kyrgios came in at number one with 235,158 mentions compared to Clarke's 225,045 with Fanning's shark-punching efforts taking him to number 10 with 70,270.
The statistics for the most mentioned athlete are compiled by media monitoring firm Isentia, taking in more than 1000 media outlets in Australia from metro, regional, suburban and rural areas.
Many may have thought Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne would have topped the list after becoming the first female to win the race that stops the nation, but that wasn't enough to crack the top-10.
Golfer Jason Day broke through for his first major and the world lapped up his heart warming story as he rose to No. 1 in the world rankings.
Hayne shocked the Australian sporting landscape when he quit the NRL to move to the United States to chase an NFL dream.
But not even the unbelievable story of signing with the San Francisco 49ers could top Kyrgios' efforts.
"This has been my first full year on tour, not bad to finish in the top 30 although I am not someone who looks to put numbers and rankings as my goals at the start of the year and next year will be no different," Kyrgios wrote on his blog before Christmas.
"I will keep focusing on improving as an athlete and a tennis player, working hard to get fitter, stronger, faster whilst aiming to get the best out of my tennis and making gains where possible."
Kyrgios will leave Canberra on January 1 to play in the Hopman Cup in Perth before moving to the Fast4 at the Sydney International and then the Kooyong Classic as his final hit out before the Australian Open.
Off-court drama and on-court fire has done little to dampen Kyrgios' appetite for success and the spotlight.
He soaked up the attention at the International Premier Tennis League in November and December, where he teamed up with Wawrinka and Andy Murray for the Singapore Slammers.
"Everyone knows the history between Stan and I and I was so pleased we were able to put it all behind us and move on for the sake of the Singapore Slammers and the rest of our team," Kyrgios wrote.
"Stan played unreal and clinched the title for us on the last day with some unreal tennis to cap off a great three weeks that I just did not want to end. I've truly made some friendships that will last a life time."
