That's the view of Kyrgios' former coach Todd Larkham, who believes the Canberra product's bond with Davis Cup coach Hewitt is "fantastic for the future" of Australian tennis.

Australia blew a 2-1 semi-final lead to crash out of the Davis Cup semi-finals, falling 3-2 to Belgium, continuing a 14-year drought since its last title.

Hewitt's team went into Sunday's reverse singles rubbers needing one win to book a spot in the final before Kyrgios and Jordan Thomson fell short.

Victory for Kyrgios would have guided Australia to its first final appearance since 2003, at home to France in November.

He fell short but Kyrgios looked more determined than he has in a long time and Larkham believes it could be the start of a new era for Australian tennis.

"They're going to be knocking on the door of winning the Davis Cup over the next few years," Larkham said.

"Those two guys are going to be working together a lot over the next few years hopefully so they seem to be communicating really well.

"Nick's performing well in Davis Cup, so it seems to be going well for them, which is great."

Kyrgios' surge under Hewitt begs the question on whether he should reach out to the former world No. 1 to mentor him in a bid to capture a grand slam title in the wake of a disappointing year at the major events.

Kyrgios' love of basketball over tennis is no secret but Larkham sensed the chance to play for his country and not just himself sparked the flame for the 22-year-old.

"He loves basketball and he would like it if tennis was always a team sport - I think that's what he'd prefer," Larkham said.

"He certainly seems to be thriving in the Davis Cup environment and he loves having all the other guys around supporting him.

"It's great to see that he's so fired up to play Davis Cup and that he really wants to do well for Australia. It's great to see that he's that keen and really wants to win the Davis Cup, it's fantastic."

Kyrgios sealed the the opening set with a 204kph second serve but he was broken in his very next game, and world No. 12 David Goffin never looked back on his way to a 6-7 (7-4) 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory.

Goffin played out of his skin on the clay court but Kyrgios never wilted in his ill-fated bid to take Australia back to the Davis Cup finals.

"I thought I started the match really well, I had a couple of opportunities early and could have been up three or four love up," he said.

"It was a tough match but he played at a pretty high level, I thought the match in general was a pretty high level. It was too good by him today.

"He was too good today and better as a whole.

"But we win as a team, we lose a team."

Kyrgios is already gearing up for his Laver Cup campaign against Marin Cilic at the three-day tournament which pits the best of Europe against Team World.

Larkham is expecting bumper crowds will be on hand and television ratings to soar for the tournament, which is the perfect recipe for a "pretty pumped up" Kyrgios.

"We forget that he did win the Hopman Cup as well in 2016, and he played an unbelievably good tournament event, he played so well at that event," Larkham said.

"It seems he really enjoys these team events so I expect him to play well at the Laver Cup. Hopefully he stays fit and healthy."
