Membership on rise
Triathlon ACT has increased membership by more than 10 per cent this summer, with more than 100 novices to the sport ready to line up for the official opening event of the TACT season at Yarralumla Bay on Sunday. TACT has registered more than 500 members for the 2012-13 season, but acting general manager Sarah Mareuil said the most encouraging sign was the number of rookies to the sport participating this Sunday. ''It's such good news to see the membership is up, it seems to be a national phenomenon in terms of membership numbers because all the states are registering increases in their numbers,'' Mareuil said. More than 300 athletes have entered Sunday's three races, the highlight being the long course event comprising two laps of a 200m swim, 8km cycle and 2km run.
Jones wins Classic
Canberra Bilbys triathlete Guy Jones returned from last month's World Championships in New Zealand to begin the ACT season in style last Sunday, dominating the premier ''Classic Distance'' event of the Sri Chinmoy Triathlon Festival last weekend. Coming out of the water second, Jones annihilated the field by more than three minutes on the 40km bike leg, eventually taking the win by more than five minutes from Harry Jones. Anna Bewley took out the women's Classic race, while Jack Bigmore and Hannah McClusky dominated the sprint distance events. Sri Chinmoy continues its calendar of events with the 9km National Capital Swim in Lake Burley Griffin next Sunday, December 2.
SAILING
On course for Rio
More than 100 boats will be on Lake Burley Griffin this weekend for the NSW-ACT Laser championships at the Canberra Yacht Club. Sailors from around NSW will converge on the national capital for their chance to chase glory in the sailing category which yielded Australia a gold medal at the London Olympic Games. Five-time world champion and London Olympics gold medallist Tom Slingsby has not been able to make the event, but his rivals will begin their bid for the spot at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Sailing starts at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday.
