Ochs scored twice and prolific goal scorer Michelle Heyman chipped in with the other as United easily accounted for the lowly Newcastle Jets 3-0 at Wanderers Oval on Saturday.
It was United's third win from four games and takes it to nine points, equal first with Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar.
United bounced back from last week's 1-0 loss to the Roar and took full advantage of a Jets team that has failed to collect a point this season.
Two goals within the opening 13 minutes set the tone for an impressive performance. Ochs praised the side for making amends for a slow beginning in their last outing.
''We were fired up and knew we had to come out hard after the last game when we didn't get off to the best start,'' Ochs said. ''We were moving the ball around better and had a quicker speed of play, which really helped us a lot. We really focused on that and the passes were a lot crisper and cleaner.''
United wasted no time in stamping its dominance, hitting the front in the 10th minute. Ochs reacted the quickest to a loose ball in the box, squeezing her shot inside the far post to take the lead.
Heyman doubled the advantage just three minutes later with a superb individual effort.
Any doubt over the result was put to bed when Ochs cleaned up a shot off the crossbar in the 63rd minute for her second.
Goalkeeper Lydia Williams kept her third clean sheet of the season and has conceded just one goal in 360 minutes.
The Matildas custodian was rarely troubled by a Jets side that didn't provide the star-studded United outfit with much of a challenge. United will get a greater gauge of its form on three more road trips before returning to Canberra.
Away fixtures against Perth Glory this Saturday will be followed by matches with Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory, and United coach Elisabeth Migchelsen is eager to see more improvement.
''I'm happy with the result, but not with the entire performance,'' Migchelsen said. ''The first 20-25 minutes we created a lot of chances and at half-time it should have been not 2-0 but 5-0 to Canberra. We didn't finish our opportunities and there was a lot of wind in the second half, which made it difficult for us with our passing.''
The Victory and Roar can reclaim top spot on Sunday in their respective games with Sydney FC and Adelaide United.
