The Bureau of Meteorology says snow could fall above 800 metres during the day on Friday, with the potential for parts of Mount Ainslie, Mount Majura and Black Mountain to receive a dusting of white.
The cold conditions slated for later in the week will follow a particularly cold Wednesday morning in Canberra, after the temperature dropped to as low as minus 5 overnight.
Wednesday's conditions saw Canberra record a colder temperature than Thredbo and Perisher.
Meteorologist Craig Ryan from the Bureau of Meteorology said cold conditions were expected to continue for the rest of the week in the capital.
"There'll be a series of cold fronts making their way across the ACT and NSW from tomorrow, bringing a lot cooler air from Victoria and parts of the Southern Ocean," Mr Ryan said.
While the cold front won't lead to minimum temperatures colder than those seen on Wednesday morning, maximums will remain in single figures.
"We'll see warmer minimums than what we've seen recently and the main reason for that is enhanced cloud cover," Mr Ryan said.
"The cooler air sitting over the top of the cloud cover won't allow the daytime temperature to rise as much, and we're looking at a maximum of below 10 degrees for Friday and Saturday."
The bureau says Friday's conditions could bring with them damaging winds and showers, along with snow in areas that don't normally see snow.
Winds of up to 45km/h are expected.
Mr Ryan said snow in the ACT was more likely in areas to the west of Canberra above 800 metres, but areas such as Mount Ainslie could see snow snowfalls late in the day on Friday.
"It's most likely to fall on Friday around the afternoon," he said.
"Some of the shower activity will form as snow over the ACT and parts of NSW, particularly ranges in the ACT in the west."
The snowy conditions are expected to bring bumper snowfalls to Perisher and Thredbo, with up to one metre of snow forecast for coming days.
Joss McAlpin from Perisher said Friday's snowfall would be substantial.
"It's going to be anywhere between 50 to 100 centimetres and that would be fantastic," Mr McAlpin said.
A Thredbo spokeswoman said the snow slated for Thursday and Friday would lead to good skiing conditions through until the end of August and into September.
After a chilly start to Wednesday in Canberra, the rest of the day is looking to be much warmer, with a top of 16 degrees.
Showers are expected on Thursday, with a high of 11 and a low of 2.
Wind and showers are forecast for Friday and the temperature will drop to a low of 1 before reaching 8 degrees later in the day.
Similar conditions are expected on Saturday, while temperatures are expected to be colder, reaching a low of minus 1.
