The Location "Give me a thousand passionate kisses," the Roman poet Catullus wrote to his beloved Clodia. He said it in Latin, of course, and "basia mille" (a thousand kisses) became the inspiration for Geraldine and Tony Conabere to build a Tuscan-style villa, complete with vineyard and olive groves, in a glorious setting on Waratah Ridge with a view over green countryside to the mountainous spine of Wilsons Promontory as it marches into Bass Strait.
The Place Guests at the three luxury apartments in the villa can be as private as they wish, but Basia Mille is also a shared experience. Geraldine and Tony are exceptionally hospitable and friendly hosts who swiftly make everyone feel at home, and they are keen to point you towards nearby attractions and recreations, and the local food and wine. Breakfast and meals are served in the main house or on the terraces and there are many chances to sample the Basia Mille range of wines and olive oil.
The Experience Twenty minutes down the road is one of Victoria's top destinations, the wild and beautiful Wilsons Promontory National Park, with its wealth of beaches, walks and wildlife. Nearby also is the family-friendly hamlet of Sandy Point and its endless beach; enjoy tasty flounder and mussels on the menu at the Fish Creek pub. But you could also spend your whole weekend at Basia Mille, playing golf or lounging on the terrace with a glass of pinot grigio, pretending you're in Tuscany.
Don't Miss Try to get down to see at least a bit of the Prom - it's well worth it. Swim or walk on the beach at Sandy Point. Enjoy Geraldine's breakfasts: the baked beans or the banana bread with fruit and mascarpone are a great way to start the day. jane sullivan
