A man remains in hospital with life-threatening head injuries after being found in a Fitzroy street this morning.
Police, who have not been able to speak to the injured man, are appealing for witnesses to piece together what happened.
It is believed the man, 30, alighted from a taxi in Nicholson Street, near the corner of Cecil Street, between 5.30am and 5.50am.
He was found by a passer by in Nicholson Street about 6am.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said the man was treated at the scene before being transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A hospital spokeswoman this afternoon said the man remained in a critical condition.
Investigators are keen to speak to the taxi driver who dropped off the man .
