Police are appealing for help to catch a man who used a stolen postal van to carry out a series of thefts across Melbourne's north-western suburbs.

The Mitsubishi van was stolen from Moonee Ponds on December 31 last year. Police believe the van, with the numberplate YSQ 483, was used in multiple incidents between January 28 and April 3.

The thief is believed to have stolen trailers, a motorbike and caravan. He is also thought to have burgled a property in Ascot Vale during the crime spree that also included Essendon, Footscray West, Coburg and Melton.

Police said the man was of Middle Eastern or Indian appearance, aged in his 20s or 30s and up to 175 centimetres tall with a medium build.

Police have released images of the man with stolen property.

He was wearing a black cap, orange fluorescent jumper with blue sleeves, black pants, runners and gloves.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
