A learner driver caught speeding and driving dangerously while under the influence of alcohol had four young children in the car, police say.

The 26-year-old Braybrook man was nabbed by police in Chiltern, in the state’s north-east, about 6.15pm on Tuesday.

Police said the man was overtaking other cars and trucks on the Hume Freeway at speeds of up to 159km/h.

When he was pulled over in Barnawartha North police discovered four children, aged between five and 12, in the back seat. Two children were sharing a seat belt.

The man had a learner's permit and a female passenger in the front seat had an expired learners permit.

A police spokeswoman said the driver returned a positive preliminary breath test result and later blew 0.074 at Wodonga police station.

The driver’s vehicle was impounded and he will be charged on summons with driving dangerously, speeding, overloading a vehicle, and driving as an unaccompanied learner driver.
