CCTV shows the horrifying moment a toddler fell between the train and platform at Reservoir station last Friday afternoon.
A mother was getting off the outbound train at 4.20pm with a pram, when her daughter slipped through the gap between the platform and under the train.
As passengers crowded around, a fast-acting Good Samaritan stepped in and reached down to grab the young girl who was aged between two or three years old.
After about 25 seconds, the child was pulled up and put back in the arms of her mother, uninjured.
"This is a confronting and scary experience for any parent," Metro Trains spokeswoman Larisa Tait said.
"We commend the customers who rendered assistance alerting the driver and lifting the little girl back onto the platform."
First aid was offered but the mother refused and she and her daughter walked away from the incident unharmed.
Metro Trains says the gap between the train and platform varies depending on the fleet type.
"The main message for our customers is to always be vigilant, especially when travelling with small children, and to hold their hands while boarding and exiting the train," Ms Tait said.
